    Might go planted...

Sorry Fort, I'm like the one person who won't touch a Fishneed it light. The one they sent me was faulty and arced and tripped breakers. Melted the prong on the fixture kind of arced, too. No fishneedit for me, ever again.

    Might go planted...

Hey Flossie! I'm actually in full on research mode as I consider upping the lights and doing CO2. I will say that the reflectors in my Coralife T5 Dual, are pitiful and it's a pretty slim case, so no room to do an upgrade myself on the reflectors I don't think. I'm really loving the look of...

    Cardinal Tetras Keep Dying

Did you mix the pet store water with what's in your tank?

    cycling with live plants

If it's small enough or you have a large enough pot, boil the DW for a few hours or run it a couple times through the dishwasher with no soap. Failing that, soak it until it leaches only a bit then pop it into the tank. As you'll be doing at least one or two water changes before the end of the...

    cycling with live plants

I cycled with lights and plants, yes there was some algae, but as I was preparing for otos it was ideal. I'm cycling my class tank, with plants and lights again, this time with a bnp in mind, (knowing that we'll be trading him out when he's too big, relax peeps). That said, I didn't get *huge*...

    Weird Plant problem

Algae Control With Flourish Excel | Aquariums Life You should be well beyond the diatoms phase, I'd think. You may have the red/brown algae that I had, which is much stiffer? I guess than diatoms. This was the first link I found that explains why it works, there used to be a better one.

    Weird Plant problem

Your tank and mine got up and running about the same time, yes? I noticed a crazy outbreak of red/brown type of algae that I needed to pretty much scrub away. If you're able to rub it off a fair bit and then do a pwc and perhaps move to 2ml/day dosing of excel? When I came home from the family...

    My fish keep dyeing!!!!

I hate to rain on your parade, LG, but it's often a better choice to have the betta enter the tank last, so he doesn't own the environment. The other choice is to do a major rescape put the other fish in then return the betta to the tank, last.

    Oto's

IIRC it's 10g (that's US gallons) and six fish, in a well established moderately to heavily planted tank. If you wait until you have a pretty heavy coating of diatoms, the otos will be fat and happy for several days.

    My fish keep dyeing!!!!

I know we keep harping on this issue, Mahoney, but seriously before you buy even one more fish, BUY YOUR OWN TEST KIT! Money spent on that will pay for itself the first time you discover poor water conditions and are able to make changes immediately, rather than waiting until you have 2 hours...

    My fish keep dyeing!!!!

If you return all the fish, rather than just the ones that are unsuitable for size/compatibility issues, then you'll want to do a fish-less cycle using ammonia. If you choose to keep some of the fish, you'll do a fish-in cycle. Both are in post #8 of this thread and both will require, you...

    My fish keep dyeing!!!!

Return what fish you are able, however this is a kind, but strong reminder to not purchase any new fish while you are at the store. You are currently in the process of cycling your tank and until you have a large enough bacteria colony, any new fish is simply adding more ammonia (poison!) to...

    PH Adjustment Question

Ah, well then. The best method is drip acclimation, slow and steady, but if you're willing to deal with the challenge, bucket up all the fish, and change out the substrate.

    PH Adjustment Question

I guess my first question is what type of sand are you using? Pool filter sand, or standard aquarium sand shouldn't adjust pH... Unless you purchased cichlid sand, which contains aragonite?

    My fish keep dyeing!!!!

Ok, before you buy a second filter, which filter do you currently have? Buy your own test kit: API Master Test kit for Freshwater, if your lfs didn't even tell you about cycling the tank, I wouldn't trust them to be using a good test kit that will give you fairly accurate readings. (BTW...

Anyone have any idea what kind of light exactly is in this set up? (maybe stupid ques

It's a T8 8000K bulb. As you wish to plant, it'll behoove you to upgrade to a T5 dual fixture, that'll give you medium light, give or take, at the substrate. I have the same tank and I use something like this fixture, running 6700K & 10,000K bulbs 10 hours a day with 2ml of excel at lights...

Can I keep a betta in my community tank?

Yes, you may keep a male beta splendens in a community tank. However, as with all new additions to a tank, watch watch watch! Make certain there's no excessive chasing or nipping.

    end of cycle issue?

It is possible that not being completely covered in water may have caused some, though certainly not a complete, die off of the :bb: in your HOB Why you are allowing the water to 'warm back up' before running the filter again?

    end of cycle issue?

I am confused by the timing in your post: Did you allow the tank to sit, empty of water for three hours Or Did you fill up the aquarium, allow the tank to sit for three hours without the filter running, then condition the water and turn the filter back on. Or Did you fill up the tank...

    Fish for hard water?

I have 14 of them and still going, mind you, even having taken steps, my GH/KH is only 2* and my pH holds at 7.4. I'm really enjoying the little guys, I find myself counting them and laughing as they play follow the leader.

    What am i doing wrong??

I don't know a whole bunch about your filter as I'm using Aquaclear. That said, I'd find a way to have all four cartridge slots filled and only change ONE of them each month. Also, if those cartridges use carbon, find a way to diy pads that don't have carbon, since carbon apparently can...

    What am i doing wrong??

Test strips are notoriously inaccurate. If that's what the store is using then you are not getting good readings about your water's parameters. For better information about your aquarium's conditions it is recommended by most of AA to use the API Freshwater Master Test Kit to test the water...

    What in the world??

He could be stressed or bored? Let him flare a couple times a day, perhaps? Redecorate? Give him fish buddies since shrimp aren't entertaining enough? Lower the lights a bit? have a good road trip and be safe!

    Fish for hard water?

The pH is fine, your fish, if properly acclimated will also be just fine. pH for most fish is the least concern, so long as it is stable. I have no water hardness, which caused my pH to crash abruptly, so I had to take steps to stabilize my pH, which is now at a steady 7.4 and I have green...
