Off Topic: Need some snow pics...

Ah, it's going to be great once it starts snowing. Up to the mountains for snowboarding, then.

    Fishnip!!

Might want to get organic cucumber, just to be safe. Ya never know what can be in those lame bio-engineered/pesticide ridden vegetables.

    Algae Eater Health

If the other fish are fine, it's probably not some particular thing in the water, but could be the quality of the water. Many algae eaters are very sensitive to water conditions and quality. I'd recommend changing 25% of the water every two weeks, at least. I personally change 25% every week...

    dead cory

Most likely, he was sick when you got him, or you didn't acclimate him to the tank long enough. I'm curious, did you get him at a chain pet store like Petsmart?

    tetra runt

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can really do about it. :(

    My guppy looks funny...

Sorry to hear about the fish dying. It sounds more like he was deformed from birth than it being a disease. Unfortunately, guppies are often in-bred and kept under pathetic conditions, and the guppies you find in normal pet stores like Petsmart and such can be more susceptible to diseases and...

    Odd Angels

Women non-aquarists seem to want to feed the fish all the time (no offense meant). :)

    my fish are loggers

Hee hee. It's not the guppy. Like Corvus said, it's probably the pleco, unless you have other fish in the tank.

    Live Plants - For a 45Gallon - Your Suggestions ?q

Sorry for the confusion, I was talking to Grant R. I wasn't commenting on anyones post.

    Algae, Algae, Algae!!!!

I've never really had any algae problems in any of my tanks. How long do you leave the lights on? How often do you do water changes?

    Wild local fish?

Quite a few of the cichlids I've kept are/have been wild caught, though I purchased them. When I was living in Nevada, however, I caught Archocentrus nigrofasciatus (Convict cichlids) myself, and bred them. Many of the fish you'd find at Petsmart or other chain stores have been bred in captivity...

    Live Plants - For a 45Gallon - Your Suggestions ?q

I don't have anything against standard community aquariums, but have you looked into cichlids at all? I used to have community tanks, but I keep cichlids almost exclusively now. Some of the small West African riverine or dwarf South American cichlids are great in a planted tank. Just sharin' my...

    How about some pics?

Re: Planted Tanks Not all cichlids will uproot or eat plants. I keep cichlids almost exclusively, and almost all small cichlids won't bother plants at all. Even most of the large ones I keep are fine with plants.

    Water Changes

I change 20-25% of my aquarium's water at least every week, and I often change 10% every two days. If you want even more content fish, change the water more than every two weeks. They'll appreciate it. As for using cold water, keep in mind that if the water gets colder even slightly, there's...

    What are the best temps.

78 F seems a bit high, I'd say 75 F would be better. Some species of molly and guppies can hail from water that's as low as 64 F. 75-76 is what I'd recommend.

    will my filter work here?

I'd say not, unless you have the filter blasting the water out (which isn't good for most fish) the filtered water won't reach the other end of the aquarium.

    Overpopulation...

Not unless the pond is heated, or she lives in the tropics.

    Homemade background idea

It's a great idea, and can look really nice if you spend the time to fit the rocks together well. It's less expensive than importing those awesome in-tank molded backgrounds from Sweden.

What Made You Want A Freshwater Aquarium?

My dad stored his old aquarium in our shed, and I was rumagging through it one day and found the tank. I decided to set it up. I had a normal community tank for a while, but my personality is one that if I get involved in something, I have to learn more and more about it. So in doing that, I...

    My fish is a runt?

He could be a runt, and it's even possible that he's a different species, though I'd have to see him to be sure, of course. There's nothing really wrong with runts, they just aren't as big (of course :) ) and sometimes don't live quite as long.

    Overpopulation...

I've not seen any horribly overpopulated tanks myself, but 7 full grown oscars in a 55g tank is just nasty.

    Save my swordtail!

How much of a water change did you do? Did you condition all the water, and was it the same tempature (or very close to) the water in the aquarium? If the water is colder, or much warmer, than the aquarium water it can cause heavy stress.

beta splendens and colisa lalia tank mates?

My experience with Colisa Lalia (Dwarf Gourami) has been that they can be nippy, males especially. I wouldn't recommend putting the Betta with them because, like Wolverine said, they'll probably bite the fins off the Betta. If I'm not mistaken, It's best to keep Bettas alone or with females in a...

    Regarding water current

Thanks Logan. The aquarium he's in has a lot driftwood, and I buffer the PH a bit with every water change. How much current would you consider turblent? When I put the second filter on, the current was enough that the plants in the tank were swaying back and forth, about 1/3 of an inch in each...

    Regarding water current

I have a 29 gallon standard size aquarium with an unknown Cichlasoma species cichlid and an Acarichthys Heckelii (Threadfin Acara). I'm thinking about putting a second Whisper filter on the tank (the 40 "triad power filter" model). Anyone think that this would bother the fish? I can't find...
