Haha, I've got Bio Safe to and boy does it stink. It has some sort of sulfur compound as an ingredient and I think that's what we smell (rotten eggs). I keep it in two plastic bags and then a ziplock and haven't looked back since. The stuff seems to work though and I think the smell is normal.

Agree is malkore, ammo lock will actually work do the exact opposite of what you want to when cycling the tank. You want ammonia levels to rise in order to promote the growth of good bacteria which will turn the ammonia into nitrite so on and so on until you have a happy and healthy tank

I actually then tested a cup of water with no sand and got the same results. It looks as if I have dissolved CO2 in my tap water and once it has time to sit the PH goes up to it's real level.

My lfs actually gave me a bunch of filter media. You need to be careful that you are positive that the tanks at the lfs don't have a disease, but if you are then it's great. They don't just offer it away, but I asked for some gravel and they said they've got some better for me.
