Yeah the cheto grows pritty fast. I throw out about a 5 gallon bucket every month or so. I see a lot of people running there fug lights 24/7 and that probably works fine but because the light I am using is a 24 inch 2 t5 witch is way over kill I run it opposite my display tank light.
Yeah he never stops sifting. But back on subject I know most will probably not agree with me but I don't believe a skimmer is ever a must. There are other more natural ways to remove exes nutrients.

I don't see any coraline in any of the pictures posted. All I see is red slime witch is a bacterial algae and will kill everything. You need to scrape it all off and get as much out of the tank as you can and treat your tank with red slime remover. Your fish store should have something to help you.
It looks to me like you have slime algie. If the dark purple on the rocks comes off easy than that's probably what it is. If that's what you have you need to get rid of it or it will take over everything. Get as much of it out as you can and treat with red slime remover. This happened to me...
