mixing instant ocean reef crystal salt and still cloudy

To address your first question, yes it is normal for salt mixes to be cloudy at first. With proper circulation, this should clear up in a few hours. However, if I am reading your post right, it looks like you may have mixed the salt in the tank. That's probably ok since there is nothing in the...

Thanksgiving break.....5 hours away for 10 days

Suggestion: Auto top off and food timer OR make a new friend who can tend to your tank. If not, looks like nemo is going for a ride.

    BTA advice

I don't advise attempting to move a nem unless you either A) have a lot of previous experience with nems or B) are willing to accept a potential loss while getting some experience with nems : ) what you are seeing is very normal light acclimation. Don't rush to feeding, poking, prodding or...

    Iodine

Agree with the previous posters, stop dosing. Besides the possibility of reaching toxic levels, it can contribute to a nifty algae explosion. I will hand it to you though, at least you tested or had it tested, most people just start dosing. GL!

bubble tip anemone - water changes

Im not picking on cmor1701d, its the standard answer or answers to the "my nem is <insert concern here>" post. I agree with the not strong enough light part, but the rest is pure conjecture. T-5s or halide are common for keeping nems, CF is not unheard of though. I knew a woman in our local...

How do zoos allow touchable anemones?

Nems, some specicies more than others, are far more resilient than a lot of over cautious hobbiest would ever believe. There is a very cool thread on the RC site where a guy in Australia took pics of a low tide event showing many animals, including our beloved nems, exposed to the sun. Yes...

    3 Gallon saltwater Fish Tank

I believe if you are committed to taking care of the tank, no reason why you couldn't place a nano species fish or shrimp in the tank. The key is being prepared to handle such a small water volume. The usual chores apply only with greater frequency. That is, monitoring temp, salinity, top off...

What should you do in a power outage?

    1. Don't panic. 2. Nothing. At least not right away. Odds are power will come back soon, if not check out #3. 3. Water circulation. I use a simple DC to AC inverter ( dc to ac inverter - Google Product Search ) to plug into my car's cigarette lighter. I then plug an short extension cord into the...

    Help me with an anemone

Lighting? Though I suspect it's pc if it came with the 12 dx. People keep nems under pc lighting, though it will be interesting to see where it moves. Best cover any pump intakes now if you have any. Also, you should contact your local reef club, find out if someone will buy it from you or just...

Can my tank make me sick?

Sounds like the flu to me. If you go to a physician/allergist, they can test and find out if its flu or something else (mold, etc). How anyone else would be sick from non-direct contact with the coral is beyond me.

    Changing Salt

I use Kent Sea Salt, bags only. I have found that the smaller bags (I get them in cases of three) have more consistent make up. FWIW, I have tried IO, Oceanic, Coral Pro, etc but I stick with Kent in bags only as it tested more consistently for SG, Ca, Alk etc. For anyone wondering, I did try...

Blue Tang Scared Of the Dark

Egg crate over the top of the tank and a couple weeks of remedial training with all lights out at bedtime. Either that or place the moon lights on a timer. Sounds like the fish has you trained pretty well at this point ; )

And and the great salt debate begins anew...You will see differences in the salts if you are testing for them. Otherwise, you may never notice a difference.

    Planaria Flat Worms

I have them now and I have found that regular siphoning is about the best mitigation there is. I did add a spotted mandarin and was planning to add a 6 line, but between the mandarin and siphoning, I can deal with them. There is a flavor of flat worm that will eat SPS but luckily not what I...

How do you grow green hair algae?

Urchin's that I have had did a great job is clearing the hair algea, blenny as well. Honestly, if you are looking to grow hair algea, it may be better to give/sell the hares. It may be a 'controlled burn', so to speak, that quickly gets out of control.

    new sw set up

When your test kits (You did purchase some test kits?) show that the ammonia and nitrite are zero'd out. At that point you would start your cycle of water changes using either RO or RODI water and fresh salt mix (You did get a refractometer or hydrometer?) to lower any nitrates to acceptable...

    BTA Splitting

No one knows for sure why BTA's split 'naturally' anymore than we can predict if clowns will host in them. I have one GBTA that has split once in about 3 years (induced) and a RBTA that split (Same tank) after about 3 weeks of it being in my tank for no apparent reason. Myself and others have...

    refugium lighting period?

One main reason I see reefers use opposite lighting cycles is to help control PH swing. With out any details on how large your tank and fuge are, its hard to say that you be able to see any benefit from a reverse cycle. If I am reading correctly, you are using a fluoro and a desk light...

    new tangs fighting

Takes a while for nature to take its course. Given the stress and my experience with yellows, I wouldn't be surprised if it was crashed out in the next couple days. Yellows just don't seem to deal with stress very well. I would be tempted to remove the kole and let the yellow establish itself...
