NEED HELP! Nitrates are always high!

Clearly not often enough. Since the ppm is so high should I completely empty the canister and clean everything and refill with tap? I have heard that usung tao kills all healthy bacteria.

NEED HELP! Nitrates are always high!

Set up: 55 gallon, Gravel, Fluval 405 (full bio), 10 mid light plants(small), Basic tropical fish. Ammonia, pH, and Nitrites are perfect, but I continuously have a high nitrate level and black algae. This has been going on for a year now and I keep losing fish here and there when, I guess...

    Water Levels Question

Well it's been about 2 weeks now since adding new water and plants. I kept doing water changes and still had high ammonia so I kind of neglected it out of frustration/wanting to see what the filter would do. Tested it today and all was well. Got me thinking to test the tap even though I have...

    Need help with light.

Definitely. My main issue is length though and getting those shadows on both sides of the tank. So I was thinking of getting a longer fixture and if I'm going to do that then I want to get a light that is going to be appropriate for what I have now but will be good for upgrading inside the tank.

    Need help with light.

Not a light for fish haha. It's a reptile fluorescent that I had left over from when I had turtles in that tank. It's worked fine as a full in, but slowly upgrading my aquarium now as I'm able to get money and this light causes shadows and really isn't meant for what I have now.

    Need help with light.

I need to upgrade/change my light. I have a 55 gallon with basic tropical fish and looking to add 4-5 low mid plants. I have been somewhat intrigued by LED fixtures due to look cost and efficiency, but am concerned that it won't supply the appropriate light to keep plants. The other fixture I...

    Very high nitrate!

Well according to my expired test strips it's 80ppm. I did test my tap and it's 0ppm again according to the expired strips. I last changed my water 2 weeks ago.

    Very high nitrate!

Brand for tests? In the mean time I still have that brown algae growing constantly. Is that a light or possibly oxygen issue?

    Very high nitrate!

It's strips and just looked it is expired however something is off if I'm getting brown algae.

    Very high nitrate!

Have had my tank up and running for about 6 months and it's been consistent in its levels. Ph is consistent ammonia is 0 ppm and Nitrites are 0 ppm as well. However I have always had a very high nitrates level and brown algae. I find myself having to do a 50% water change very often. With the...

    PH Adjustment Question

It is sand that contains aragonite. Which was not my intention but, one of those too late moments.

    PH Adjustment Question

Thanks. As far as the water quality the ammonia is 0ppm, nitrites is 0ppm, and nitrates are 40ppm. So the PH was my only concern as far as water quality. My only other question would, be whats the best way of acclimating them?

    PH Adjustment Question

I know that water changes have nothing to do with PH. I was just stating that with the types of fish I'm looking to get, I know I wont need to do frequent water changes. Meaning that the effects of using driftwood wont wear off as apposed to a tank environment that needs frequent water changes.

    PH Adjustment Question

I currently have my aquarium set up with sand which is causing my PH level to be around 7.8-8. I tested the tap to see if that was part of the problem as well but it came up at 6.8 and its not hard water. I'm just looking to keep simple fish right now such as tetras, barbs, corys, etc. With...

    Bowing tank

I have a glass 55 gallon tank that I just filled. I did get it used from someone that had it up and running fine. I filled it earlier this week and now I noticed that its bowing by 3/4 of an inch. Is this normal for a glass tank, or is it time to retire this one?
