    Strange Nitrate readings.

are you shaking bottle #2 when you do the nitrate test? the solution in that bottle can settle, which will lead to low readings.

those three in one tank starters

I've heard mixed stories about nite-out since it actually contains nitrospira but also has nitrobacter which seems to be commonly accepted as being wrong now, so I don't know how well it would work with the two bacteria competing with each other

    Blue crayfish

It's been posted several, several times, but maybe you missed it. No, no one recommends having plants in a tank with a crayfish. They are known for tearing plants apart just because they feel like it. It seems like you might be waiting for someone to come by and say a cray with plants is fine so...

Will this LED fixture be sufficient for lowlight plants?

flourish excel and flourish comprehensive (i assume this it he flourish you're talking about) are two different things completely. excel is a carbon source, like co2. flourish is a fertilizer, giving plants micronutrients. yeah, they need a better naming scheme

    shrimp vs snail

mystery snails need 2 snails to breed and nerite snails need brackish water, so 1 of either would work without having to worry about a huge snail population

OH NO!!!! Tank is LEAKING during cycle. HELP ME !!!!

get a bucket or big plastic tub and fill it up with water from your tank. then put all your filter material and whatever else you can fit into the bucket to keep it wet. next, can you actually see where there is a leak and what's causing it? is it a crack in the glass or is it coming through the...

New tank, fish died; what to do next?

what did your ammonia readings say the entire time? was it always low? and those tests do expire which could lead to entirely wrong readings. liquid test kits are highly recommended as they are more reliable than the test strips. if it were me, i would just break the tank down and rebuild it...

    Crayfish

I saw a blog post once where he had a picture before he added in a blue crayfish which was a nice very heavily planted tank, then a picture of after he added it, and the water was so dirty you couldn't see past the glass because the crayfish had dug up all his plants and put a ton of his dirt...

    too many plants???

it won't matter except most plants will lose some leaves and stuff when you transfer them, so if you add a lot at once, you're gonna have a lot to clean up at once lol

Tank is cycled but NitrAte are high (after PWCs)!

Whoops, sent too early. Anyway, I was going to also say that it is very possible to have that high of nitrates since it sounds like you repeatedly dosed up to 4 ppm ammonia without doing any water changes until the end.

Tank is cycled but NitrAte are high (after PWCs)!

how many times did you dose up to 4ppm ammonia and how many water changes did you do, if any?

    I need some lighting advice

I was just confused because I was thinking a spiral CFL instead of a power compact. Anyway, I believe, if I remember correctly (which I very well may not), that PC is rated a little worse than T8s in terms of wpg. So 2wpg of T8 might be medium, 2wpg of PC lighting might only be low

    Blue crayfish

those crayfish are notorious for destroying planted tanks

    Sponge filters

it's also a very gentle filter so it works great in a tank with fry and other small critters

    active sponge filters

I'm pretty sure that was me in someone else's thread, so you're welcome! It worked great for me too and good to hear it worked just as well for you. definitely worth the investment
