Mine only come out in the daytime when I feed them. Found them in the filter several times before, and in decorations I've taken out. One seems to like going in a small crack next to the outlet of the filter. They've always been fine so far.

Amano's are your best bet. I have 4 and they don't bother anything, and nothing bothers them. I have 1 ghost shrimp that likes to have a nibble of my smaller fishes tales. The red cherry, tiger, bee shrimp would most probably be eaten or you'll rarely see them.

Yes I have used this method. I didn't have a problem herding the single fish I wanted into the trap.

Depending on the fish you could try netting while feeding flake food. Failing that a plastic drink bottle cut in half with the neck pushed inside the bottom half to make a trap.
