Should I upgrade my lighting system?

They are not overkill and they will be fine for your tank. I had a 175 watt MH over my 20 gal  + 2 VHOs You can never have too much light unless you are keeping shrooms. Shrooms will live in high light, but they a have to be acclimated. What type of coral are you looking at keeping...

    protein filter help needed

The bio balls are your source of your nitrates. you really need to remove them, but as fluff said you must NOT take them all out at one. Remove 1 or 2 a day to let you fio filtration keep up. As far are your skimmer. Seaclones are without a doubt one of the worst skimmers (I bought one and...

    liverocks.com worth it?

I have the LR.com rock. The only bad things I can say about it are that it is dense so you will need a bit more then say if you went with fiji. It also looks a little "boulderish", but the color and life is very nice. So it's a toss up. When you get Fiji and other uncured lr chance are it will...

    Cleaner Wrasse?

They do well in a FO tank that is stock with a lot of fish. I have not seen any one have luck with a Reef tank and a cleaner wrasse. I would love to have one though.

    Inexpensive alternative for reef lighting?

Also EVC, which have turned out to be great ballast and bulbs. www.oceanencounter.com. They have an excellent PAR rating and they have a complete retro for well under 200. 159 for a 250 watt bulb...

    Inexpensive alternative for reef lighting?

I would go with a MH pendent. You can get a 250 or 175 watt Electronic ballast setup for under 200 bucks and it would be plenty of light. You would be able to keep anything in you tank.

what sps will grow and maintain their color under 4x65w pc's

You may be able to keep a milliapora, but that light is too low to really keep any color. Most brightly colored Acropora require very intense lighting. The General rule is. Blue, pink and purple require the most light.

SPS Frags: Please help!! Polyps retracted?

SPS are very picky about flow and nutrients. Your lighting a flow is a bit on the low side, but I think it should be ok if it is not a SPS only tank. I would put the Coral as high as posible. Also you should put the coral in a indirect flow path. Meaning bounce the flow off of a wall etc. Many...

SPS Frags: Please help!! Polyps retracted?

You lighting is a bit on the low side for SPS, but that second picture the polyps look fine. I have some acros that took months to get happy. Mostly wild colonies. The white can either be new growth or it could be bleaching (it looks like the whole branch is turn white, which would indicate...
