Stocking a 20 Gal. Long SE Asia biotope

well, I got it set up, I am running a Fluval C4 HOB filter, lighting is a 30" AquaticLife 2-bulb T5HO for 2.4 watts per gallon, my substrate is Flourite Red, I have added a small piece of driftwood, a bunch of river rock, and for the moment planting consists of Wisteria, Green Temple Hygro...

    Dreamtank?

Well, mine would be a massive freshwater native biotope, maybe a 300 gallon, aquascaped with locally gathered driftwood and native plants, as well as a very rocky corner to simulate the bottom of most of our local lakes. stock would be bluegills, black crappie, pumpkinseeds and a few bullheads...

Stocking a 20 Gal. Long SE Asia biotope

Thinking about setting up a new tank, but a little short on space. Any recommendations for stocking a 20-gallon long SE Asia biotope? Tank will be fairly densely planted, and will feature natural driftwood, looking for livestock suggestions...any ideas?

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

weekly 50% PWC, and was overjoyed to see all my fish are over their PWC anxiety, to the point that at one time I had 7 cardinal tetras, 3 bleeding heart tetras and a Bolivian ram trying to get at a snail shell that was caught in the vacuum tube.

    Proper pH 6.5

that was my route, I gradually added granulated peat to my filters, and it reduced my pH from 7.6 to 6.8, reduced both the general and carbonate hardness, keeps both pH and hardness steady once established, and, most importantly, changes the water chemistry gradually enough that it didn't harm...

German blue rams... how many is many?

from my own experience, if you need to adjust your pH down, I just add peat to my filters...it will gradually add trace elements, tannins and humic acids to the water that will both soften it and reduce the pH. Plus, once established, it does a very good job of buffering the water to neutral or...

    Neon tetras "real"?

Yes, they are naturally colored, but are far more vibrant in aquariums than in nature due to lighting differences, seeing as their natural biotope is heavily shaded and often has dark, tannin-stained water, far from the bright fluorescent lighting in home aquaria, don't believe me...look at how...

    Fish are FRIENDS, not expendable!

I don't understand the mentality of fish being expendable, and I'll admit that I do get a little emotional when I lose one, or worse, have to put one down, but I understand that people have their own opinions that nothing will change, and as to my outlook on killing animals, I've never liked...

    Least favorite fish.. why?

Again, hatin' on my faves...My cardinals have been alive for 8 months now with only one minor bout with ich, and I love hatchets, even though the wife thinks they're ugly and look weird...

    Least favorite fish.. why?

So far...two of my favorite fish have been mentioned, the bolivian ram and the cardinal tetra...but as to my least favorites, anything "balloon" or dyed and fancy goldfish. Also never been a fan of long-finned varieties either...and I really prefer the "wild" coloration over tank-bred color...

    Help sexing my Rams

really? My bolivians don't bother anyone, and even while breeding they were relatively peaceful, except to one Bleeding heart tetra who had a hard time learning to leave the eggs alone.

    surprise!

yep, they are taking turns fanning water over them, and the female is diligently keeping all the other residents of the tank well away from their rock.

    surprise!

yep, I was super excited! the male ad been clearing off rocks and digging nests for weeks now, and just after the last water change on Wednesday, the female began clearing rocks as well. I just finished setting up a 29g as a rearing tank, now to just wait and see how many actually hatch...

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

Freaked out (in a good way :) ) when I realized my Bolivian Rams had spawned while I was at work and are now diligently guarding their eggs...will try to get a pic, but they chose a rock that is mostly hidden from view by driftwood, so I can't get a good shot.

If you had a 10000 Gallon Tank

Mine would likely be a native biotope based on my favorite local fishery...the North Branch of the Susquehanna River...with sand, plants, wood and rockwork, stocked with smallmouth bass, bluegills, carp, fallfish, walleye and channel cats.
