I've got 3 brand new, just out of the boxes, making rattling noise. One is really bad similar to your video. I tried calling the company today only to get dead ended with an error message. So, I went on their website to submit a question. I'll let you know what I hear back.

It's just an upside down glass vase sitting on a frame I made out of 1/2 PVC pipe. As long as the open bottom end stays below the water level, it stays full of water. The fish love it. They have been going up there all afternoon.

My barrel is finally almost done, complete with homemade skippy filter and fish observatory. Just need to paint PVC stand under observatory black. Can't really see the mosquito fish but the color of the rosy red minnows are nice against the dark background. I'll get a few more of those.

Here it is. Complete with a fish observatory. After guiding one of the rosy red minnows in to take a few pics, he got out and then went back in again on his own. So I had to take more pics. Ill have to get a few more of the rosy reds, their color stands out better than I thought they would.

I've heard pool filter sand is a good choice. I've seen it at home depot in the garden section for about $5. Very cheap!!

I feel like Xmas came early!! I've heard these are the best HOB filters. So far I like them, but they seem so fragile and brittle. Any recommendations or secrets with care and maintenance to keep these in tip top shape?

Yeah baby!!!! After letting nitrites catch up it only took 5 more days of dosing back up to 3-4 ammonia to finish the job. Thanks everyone for all your help!!!!! A couple more days of testing and my mosquito fishies and rosy red minnows will have a new home.

That source looks like its trying to build up both BB at the same time a little at a time without letting the first bacteria get ahead. But I would think that by the time the second bacteria catches up to the first dose, the first bacteria would have died off from starvation, and it would be...

It is. I used straws instead of the k1 media, which was way too hard to get and very expensive. I'm sure k1 would work a lot better.

I meant to say that they are different sizes of straws, cut up. I tried to cut the straw length to their diameter. The fat straws are cut a bit longer than the skinny ones. I wouldn't count on it as my main filter, but it was fun to make.

It's working. Nitrites were at 1 about 3 hrs ago and now they are at .25. But now I'm curious to know if I can fully cycle with more ammo. I'm gonna dose up to 3 tonight. What's the worst that can happen? If nitrites skyrocket overnight, then I will finish off dosing at two again.

Ammonia 0, only 1/2 of the blue drops slowly turned purple before shaking. Final reading looked like 5. Dosed only up to 2 ammo for second day. Will test again tomorrow.
