I'm new too. I changed from gravel to sand today. Lots of work washing the sand, but well worth it looks wise. My red tail shark and Cory cats were all lovin it. At least they seem happy.

Operation change substrate went perfect. Started with fifty pounds of sand and had to have lost 5lbs. Used a garden that was I powered. Water ran clear before I put it in. Took out about 80% water. Got the gravel out and added the sand by hand. Looks great and for doing all this, it is not...

So do this with some water in the tank? I was going to take water out put the fish in the bucket with the same water and do the switch then. I like this sand idea.

Thanks to both of you. I wil think on this. I can do water changes, and cleaing the filter I would just not rinse the bio material. Right? That is where the cycle stuff is.

Makes more sense. I was planning on doing a large water change anyways. I could get it done real quick and the gravel vacum would just lift the debris of any kind right off the sand correct? It wont get all nasty underneath right? Just thinking of different variables before I do it.

Using an Aqua CLear With the Bio Media, Carbon and Spoge. I still have no traces of Nitrites or Nitrates. PH at 6.8 and Amonia very low. Using a API Master test kit. Cant figure it out. Do I need to swith to sand for the freshwater fish?

Been up and running for 3 weeks. I have not vacuumed the gravel. Have done the water changes every day just about for a week and a half.

Hey all. Still doing large water changes. Have fish in an un cycled tank. My ph is 6.6/ started at 7.2, .25 ammonia, and 0 on both nitrites and nitrates. I fish has been lost to this mishap. Any suggestions?

Ph 7.0/7.2 Ammonia- 0.25 Nitrites and nitrates 0 Still got the cloudy water, but was told it is ok. Bacterial bloom. I'm figuring I shouldn't do a water change, but if anyone thinks I should let me know and why. Thanks

Two Weeks. I have been doing daily 50% water changes as advised on here. It was clear. Started out yellow, once I shook it according to directions it went to clear. Should I stop with the water changes over the weekend? Water was still cloudy this morning.:ermm:

Ok API master test kit. Looks like it is tagged this year. I did a 50% water change last night and the 2 nights previous. Here's my numbers. Ph-7.2 Ammonia- it was clear Nitrite and nitrates at - 0 Is that right? Went by the directions.

I got a siphon/gravel vacum. I had a python before and loved it. Now I am in an apt. and the kitchen sink has one of those funky hoses as the faucet.

Just did a 50% water change and used prime in the bucket that I used to refill. Temp in tank only went up 1 degree. Figure I will do the same thing after work tomorrow. And I found the mobile app!! Woot Woot!! :-)

I was reading up on the kit and looking at the numbers. I think amonia, nitrites, and nitrrates could have been zero. Not the ph. It kinda pissed me off becuse right then I knew he was lying. He seemed taken aback when I asked him what they were. I just hope now the fish will be ok. The shark...
