    I've got a tiny jellyfish

Having no filter helps, not sure how happy with life they'll be if they make it to the sump and pump though.

    I've got a tiny jellyfish

After looking all morning to no avail, I have at least 2. Just found 1 even smaller than the 1st. My last rock addition was about a month ago so they have survived this long without ever being seen or being eaten by fish. Curious how many I'll end up with.

    I've got a tiny jellyfish

I was looking in my tank today and saw this little guy flash by, 1st time for this kind of hitchhiker. He's maybe 1/3 a pinky nail big. Video was tough as the current throws him all over. And yes I know i need to clean my glass. :)

How are you keeping your aquariums cool?

Back when I used some hot lights for my corals I fought temp swings be keeping the tanks heat up around the clock. Being warmer than normal all the time is better than going up and down 15 degrees every day. Now I've got low temp lights and just run a room ac, stays 75.

    And it begins again

So after a hiatus of a few years here I am starting new. I had a bad move destroy my multiyear project and off a couple thousand in livestock and I didnt have the heart to restart. I gave away the remaining stock, sold everything and moved on. When I quit, LEDs as moonlights were relatively...

    Gfci outlet tripped

Fluorescent liggts tend to not play well with gfci. I wouldnt hsve too much issue moving lights to a nongfci circuit, but moving the entire wet circuit over is a bad idea.

    Boiling Rocks

I had good luck killing them with boiling water and a turkey baster. Leave the rock submerged and spot treat vs killing the whole rock.

    Hydrometer not working

Ok,take a deeeeeeeep breathe and say "there is no hurry". Nothing good happens quickly in saltwater. If you are adding salt now youre at least a month from your first fish. Your tool while basic is fairly foolproof. Odds are, as long as the arm swings freely it will work. Its easy enough to...

Haven't done one in 2-3 years.

    Sand Waterfall Decor

Forgot about those things, had one years ago. Looked very cool but was very frustrating. The sand you use is really low density and either water current or the fish always emptied it out so you constantly refill it. I think it was more the fish at the time as it always looked like it was...

    Bonding Acrylic to Glass?

Going out on a limb here, but why not just buy some silicone at your local hardware store? Last time I bought pet store type silicone I paid way more for a little tube than if I had gone to the hardware store. Personally I think there's a little old lady somewhere making a killing using a...

My sump design but will it work?

Too complex. It will work, but will be more work to make than it is worth. Lose the bio balls, lose the bubble trap. Make only 1 separate compartment in the tank to house your return pump and skimmer. Drop the water inlet on the far side and fill the remainder of the tank with rock and...

    Aiptasia Explosion

Boil the rock, will kill all them at once. They should separate from the rock as well.

Top for new tank Do I need glass tops if I build a hood?

6-8 inches *should* be fine. A glass top will slow down your evap. rate, but it will also trap heat if you're using hot lights, and deflect some of the light you're trying to get into the tank. Just make sure your lights are high enough they won't get splashed with water and you'll be fine.

    tank crash

How long have you had the tank at your house? For an established tank you shouldn't be seeing any ammonia or nitrite. If you can find out what brand thermometer you had, contact the manufacturer and ask what it is filled with. I think most are completley non-toxic anymore. If you just moved...

    Heater placement

You'll be fine with the heater touching the algae. As for having part sticking out of the water... I don't know. It may be an issue over time as the material outside the water will be a different temp than inside. Can you angle it in so that the whole thing is submerged?

    moon lights?

Wow, $30 per led. I'm in the wrong business. :) You can make your own for a couple bucks, or you can have someone put the parts together for you for a couple bucks.

    Fishless Cycle pH

Around 8-8.4 if fine for the tank once its up and running. Don't worry about it right now and just let it cycle. Your water will be all kinds of screwy until its done.
