Thanks for responding Bichir Bro. I'll keep an eye out for ick and velvet. I did a 20% WC tonight. These are all new rocks and substrate so I'm sure it doesn't have the seasoned feel for these fish. Once I get to 50% water changes per week I'll be back on track.

Update I just figured out that water went into the tank on 1-7. That's a little more than three weeks ago. I generally do 50% water changes but on this new tank and just getting cycled, maybe I should just do a 20% and see if that helps with the flashing.

I was having that problem too. For me, I wasn't shaking the second nitrate bottle enough and it was giving me a 0 reading. Once I started banging it against the counter it started reading the nitrates.

I know what you mean. You certainly don't want to put a sharp rock on the glass and create a pressure point. My main worry was so the fish don't dig under the rocks and collapse them. I never thought cichlids could move sand as much as they do. Guess they have nothing better to do... ha...

I don't see why not. I've found that most people have a rock yard in their area that have a much better selection than Home Depot. Usually very good prices as well. Definitely don't buy rock at your LFS, way too expensive.

I think most people are removing their existing hood and putting the light on top. If you have fish that jump then you would need some sort of cover to go below the light.
