    Australian Flowerpot

I've been told that this is an Australian flowerpot, however, I have not been able to find anything to confirm that. The "flowers" are not on stalks but sit closely on the rock. They are super fluorescent and the brightest thing in my tank. Any ideas???

    Trine's 40 Gallon Build

Well, this build is rather unanticipated. Last night I noticed that a small scratch that I had made with some substrate and the algae cleaner has gone from being app. 2.5 inches to 6.5 inches . I'm pretty sure the "scratch" now qualifies as a crack on the front of my 28 g. bowfront...

Can I run my tank w/out a filter

I've noticed that the hoses from my canister filter are kinked right where they attach to the filter itself. Basically, the shelf underneath my tank is too short and the water flow must be rather diminished. Now, after doing some reading, I'm wondering if I could just remove the filter without...

    My husband is soo hooked!

No pun intended :D He just got back from Bahrain and saw our new fish tank. Now he's spent the last couple of days at the fish store with me (got a new fish and a new frag) and cruising the internet searching for a great deal on a larger tank  He also seems to be quite impressed by my...

    White worms in plate coral??

(not really sure if this should be in ID or disease) I noticed a small white squiggly on the tip of one of the tentacles of my plate coral. After further inspection, I noticed that the squiggly moved a bit and some of the other tentacles looked, well, pregnant and that shadows of white...

    Been such a bad girl!

Went to the lfs yesterday "only" for water . Ended up leaving with a green long-tentacled plate coral, a frog spawn, and a frag of some kind of tree that one of the regulars dropped off (took up too much space in his his tank - it was free :thumb:). Then I went to the SC zoo today...

It was free, but what is it?

A guy dropped a couple of corals off at the lfs when I was there today. Now, I got this thing, but I have no idea what it is. Any help is appreciated :)

    Low iodine

Okay, I've had two emerald crabs die from molting issues, so I decided to get an iodine test. I just did it, and it shows that my iodine level is at 0.03 whereas sea water is at 0.06. Should I get something to correct the discrepancy, or just not worry about it? I do have one emerald crab...

Yellow Watchman Goby with Fin Rot

I just noticed my watchman goby in full swim mode and the fins look terrible! :( The back is frayed and so is the dorsal fin - it is full of holes and ragged. The top edge of the first part of the dorsal fin has a brown edge to it. Basically, it sounds exactly as what I found described...

Please tell me this isn't a flowerpot coral

Really need to not impulse buy in the lfs. Can anyone tell me what I got?

    Trine's 28 Gallon Build

Alrighty, went to the lfs today and picked up some corals. So, thought I'd actually start a thread for my tank since it has now survived for almost five months! My potted plants usually don't last that long  This is what I have in my 28 G tank: 1 lil' nemo (wondering if he's going to...

    Seriously?!

I came home today to find my duncan and zoa's covered in algae  (stringy and hard to get off). Checked my water parameters and nitrates were at 10 - they have been at 0 for months. So, what could cause this spike? I hadn't done anything different. I did exchange one of my 10,000K bulbs...

    How long can corals survive

Without a current. My power head broke tonight and I will first be able to have a new one up and running tomorrow afternoon. *sigh*

    HELP! Powerhead is broken!!!

Just went to adjust it and noticed it was moving way too easily. I looked at the back and the part that attaches it to the suction cup is broken!!! It is only hanging on by a thread!!! Should I take it out or will that harm my tank? I'll go to the lfs tomorrow at lunch but won't be back home...

What is the green stuff on my rock?!

So, one of my live rocks from the lfs had some coraline algae on it. Now I'm also noticing some light green/bluish coloring that's spreading. It's pretty and it doesn't look like algae. It just looks like my daughter found a highlighter and randomly colored the rock here and there. I've also...

    Switching Filters

When I first got my tank I only had a hang on filter. About two weeks ago I set up a new canister filter. Now both filters are running. I'm wondering when I can remove the old filter. The tank is 28 gallon w/ 30 lbs of live rock (I'm assuming that all the rock is live after three months). I...

    RIP Cleaner Shrimp

Well, found Jacque dead in the tank this morning. Great. 1. How long have you had the fish? Do you know if it was wild caught, or tank raised? One week - don't know if it was tank raised or wild caught. 2. How long has the fish been in the tank? What are the tank mates? Any aggression? One...

    Dead fish!

Just got this pygmy angelfish on Friday. It seemed to be doing well: eating, swimming and exploring. Last night I noticed what looked like a small vertical gash on its side. Aside from that it looked fine, and I thought that perhaps my Duncan coral had stung it (if they do that) or perhaps it...

    Duncan Coral - Help!

I went to my lfs to get a handful of margarita snails to replace the ones that did not survive my vacation. In a very weak (and uneducated) moment I purchased a duncan coral  (supposedly easy to keep). Now, however, I've googled it and it doesn't seem that easy, plus there seems to be...

Got my first coral... now what?

Okay, I just took the plunge today and purchased some zoanthids. Now I realize that I have no idea what to do with them. They came attached to a round flat rock... am I supposed to take them off of it (if so, how?), or am I supposed to find a way to place this rather large flat rock somewhere...

    What the snail?!

So, I just got back from a two-week vacation. My neighbors were great and agreed to feed the fish (one green chromie and one bi-colored dottyback). In the tank I also had 10 margarita snails, 5 hermit crabs, 2 turbo snails, and 2 emerald crabs (maybe only one, I did a water change right before...

    Where is my fish?!

So, finished cycling the tank and got five margarita snails, five red legged hermit crabs and one damsel. After doing small water changes to get the fish used to my water it went in the tank. The snails and crabs are having a field day and have attacked rocks, substrate, and aquarium glass with...

Did I miss the ammonia peak?

I'm cycling my 28 gallon tank using the raw shrimp method. The shrimp went in Thursday last week. On Saturday ammonia was at 0.5. Thursday morning it was at 2.0. This evening (Friday) it was down to 0.5 again. Nitrite is at 5.0 (tested it for the first time today), and nitrate is at 4.0...

    Hitch hiking crab

This crab hitched a ride with my new live rocks. I wonder if anybody knows what kind it is.
