    Lowering ph

7 is fine for a Ram tank unless you want to breed. Stable PH is more important than a low one. If you want to lower the PH for Rams use the discus buffer, just follow the directions. You dont need the Neuteral regulator btw.

    Lowering ph

If your talking about lowering a full stocked tank you must do it slowly. My ph is at 6.6, tap water is 8.6. I use Discus buffer from Seachem which works great! My stock is Rams and they seem to be very happy. What to use depends on what fish you have.

Is this slate safe foe cichlid tank?

Yup boil it for a good long time, at least 30min. Before putting it the tank either get a file or use a waste peice of slate to smooth all the sharp edges. I mean all of them or the fish will cut themselves on it.

    My Golden Ram

Thanks for posting the care sheet. Yup they are a big commitment. I do my changes about every 4-5 days, not weekly like i said before. Looks like you have great success also, thats a stunning BGR! Nice work :) There should be a dwarf cichlid forum. What does everyone else think?

    Jack Dempsey in this tank?

You should be fine as long as you get a small Jack and let him/her grow up with the Dino's then they won't be "lunch" As for aggression Jacks aren't that bad, I had a 8" Jack that was killed in a few hours by a 7" Butter. Won't ever put those two together again.

    My Golden Ram

If your new to aquariums then I don't suggest you get Rams. They are tricky to keep alive longer than a couple weeks never mind a couple months if you purchase from your LFS. They are beautiful but not a fish you want to put in a new tank. I would say think about adding them after you have a...

    DIY Python

Personally for the time and headache of trying to make one I would just buy a used one any length from Kijiji or Craigslist then hit Home Depot for the longer hose. The hose is much cheaper at HD than at your LFS and does the same job. I use the HD stuff on all my filters and water changing.

I have 1 male GBR 2 females, 1 Male Golden and 1 Female Golden. So far the GBR's haven't touched any of the shrimp that I know of, hard to count them LOL. The...

Dumbest thing done during a water change?!?!?

Oh ya I think at some point we have all done that one. Something that works great for water changes is the 5gallon water cooler jugs. The hose never seems to come out and makes for easy measuring.

    Aqualight 30" T - 5 HO Double Lamp Strip?

Sounds like a great plan! Yup its all very confusing! I have found trail and error is the best way :) I will forward any info I can. Best way is to talk to others, get involved in an Aquarium Club in your area. The guys who have been doing this for decades can give you some of the best advise...

    Aqualight 30" T - 5 HO Double Lamp Strip?

Its very confusing. The only true way is through measuring the LUX of the light (I'm a commercial photographer so light is my game). I agree that the tech side makes a difference, but the size of the bulb makes all the difference. If I have a tank that is 20" deep but only 12" wide and I put 4...

    Aqualight 30" T - 5 HO Double Lamp Strip?

That chart isn't very useful because it doesn't list the wattage or bulb length. Single, double, triple etc doesn't mean anything if you don't know the wattage.

    Aqualight 30" T - 5 HO Double Lamp Strip?

So you have just over a watt per gallon which is still low on the light scale. 2 watts per gallon is medium, 3 watts is high. Right now I have 2.25 watts per gallon and everyone is happy, growth is great :)

    Aqualight 30" T - 5 HO Double Lamp Strip?

Well you have a 54 gallon tank and the light should be giving you 48watts per double tube so if you only have one then yes your under 1 watt per gallon. You need two of the lights to get you up to around 2 watts per gallon. I made a mistake earlier, I have the AquaticLife lights, and you said...
