    For Sale: 55G entire setup

The stand has been sold so now I have the LED light, 2 Eheims and a 55G tank. I can either keep parting out the setup or sell the stuff that's left as a package. The tank is your standard 55G with the bracing bar across the top. It's a little dirty but never leaked in the last handful of...

    For Sale: 55G entire setup

I wanted to give you fishkeepers the chance to buy my setup before I deal with the Craigslist crazies. :ermm: Here is what I have: 55 Gallon tank. Definitely holds water but could use some TLC as it's a little dirty. Stand - black, a small scratch or two on the front, otherwise in pretty good...

Canister experts, lend me your ear!

I've about had it with this POS. I've taken the impeller out twice, cleaned it (not sure why as it was brand new), put everything back together, and now it's having a hard time getting primed. Everywhere I read, this filter is awesome and ultra-silent. Maybe I got a bad one. I poured water...

Canister experts, lend me your ear!

Long time fish keeper but took about 5 years off from the hobby and am back in the swing of things. I picked up a 55G and am trying to find a decent filtration setup. I used to be a big HOB filter person, but the 2 AquaClear 50's I just bought sounds like a truck, as does the TopFin 60. Today...

New tank: pool filter sand + live sand?

I'm coming from the freshwater arena and used pool filter sand in the past with excellent results. It's awesome stuff! I'm looking to get a SW setup going and am in the information gathering phase now, heck I haven't even bought the tank yet, so please bear with me. :) In the LFS I see...

Maryland peeps: Rena Filstar XP1 $20.00!

It's basically brand new. One of the hoses is cut, but easily replaceable if necessary. I don't want to fuss with shipping, so I'll gladly meet you somewhere close-ish (I live in Laurel, MD) to make the sale. Please save this filter from the trash! :) It's a fine piece, just too much for my...

STL ice storm...one fish lost, more going fast

Ack, that sucks. A year or so ago, we had a 3 day outage and I, luckily, moved my fish to my parent's house. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I moved them, the next day the power came on.

I really want to use sand in my tank

Pool filter sand for teh win! I picked up a bag at the local pool store and couldn't be happier with the looks. It's going on a year since I did the gravel -> sand swap and haven't had any major issues. You don't want to vaccuum like a maniac so as not to get sand in the filter. A time or...

    Water temp. during PWC's...

I also put my water containers at room temperature and let them sit for at least a day before the water change. Unless you're dumping in 20 degree water, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Turn on hot, turn on cold, fill container, have a sammich. dsmalls, here to help! :)

    piranhas anyone?

I guess once you get piranhas, all tank landscaping ceases. Unless, perhaps, you get those pincher things.... A while back, I toyed with the idea of getting a piranha, but their size kinda turned me off. Very cool fish, nonetheless.

    cleaning a glass aquarium cover

Windex and a razor blade seem to work ok. Keep the blade at a 45% angle and you won't scratch the glass.

Fish that should come with WARNING stickers

I wonder what (if any) the ethical responsibilities of the LFS are when selling fish. Sure it's not against the law to sell a common pleco to a kid with a 5 gallon talk, but do the employees turn a blind eye against obviously wrong purchasing decisions and sell them just to make a sale? That's...

    What size filter?

The manufacturers generally seem to overrate filters horsepower. I have a 20 gallon long, and no way would one of those dinky filters (marked for 20G) work. As it stands now, I have TWO HOB filters, turned down to about 25% flow and they've worked great for years.

Giant Pacu needs home near CT. (surprise)

I'm glad the pacu got a better home. As a side note, I wonder if the local zoo would take in large fish? Do you get visitation rights at his/her new digs?

Gulp: Did you use special aquarium adhesive for your rock formation or are they standing on their own?

    feeding my pleco zuccini

Doh, I'm late with my post! Anyhoo, my plecos would go nuts for zucchini and squash. IMHO there's no need to tie it down with anything. Just cut a slice off, cut that into 2 half moon slices, then drop them in. My 2 beasts used to mosey up to the top of the water and latch on to the pieces...

    Fish compatibility w/Tiger Barbs?

I'm looking to consolidate tanks and am wondering if the following would be ok to house with 6 Tiger Barbs (and 6 scissor-tails): 2 juvi cory's (1.5") 4 zebra danios 1 rubberlip pleco (1") The barbs are currently housed with 6 scissor-tails (in a 20G long) and have never bothered them one bit...

Moving 2 tanks (10g/20g) Saturday. How to safely?

I've been saving my aquariums for last but now the time has come to move them about 20 minutes away. I initially figured I would remove the filters and decorations, scoop the fish out and put them in a bucket, drain 75% (or so) of the water, then move everything. Instead of lugging a bunch...

    home depot sand

Sorry for the semi-hijack, but how do you handle (or stop) sand from getting sucked up by the (presumably HOB filter)? Can you put some filter floss around the intake? Would you rubberband it on there?

Rena Filstar XP1 Canister Filter. Free shipping.

Rated for 45 gallons, new it was around $60. I plugged it in once and decided it wasn't for me. The hosing was cut so you'd have to get a new hose, but that's it. I'd let it go for 45$ and will ship anywhere in the US for free. Not sure how payment works around here, but I suppose PayPal...

    Advice on keeping mini-tanks cool?

Are ice cubes out of the question? I've been doing it that way for years. When it gets very hot here, I drop 6 or so ice cubes in the tank (20 G). It doesn't effect the temperature all that much, but brings it down to a normal-ish level.

Yeah, it'll be reduced from 20 minutes to 10! I never had any luck with those buggers. :D

Pardon my ignorance re: cannister filters :D

I guess I just don't get it. Seeing as I've never owned a cannister filter, I have a question or three: 1. They are generally used for aquariums >= 40 Gallons. (T/F) 2. Can you adjust the out-flow? 3. For larger tanks (55g +), would one cannister provide adequate filtration or would/should...

    The best public aquarium

Another vote for Baltimore's Inner Harbor aquarium. I usually take a trip up the road once per summer. The seahorse exhibit is really cool as is how the huge ocean tank(s) spiral when you go down the stairs. Go during the week if you want to avoid 'some' of the crowd. Another one I found was...

How to light/heat the big plastic tubs?

I bumped into a few folks who had those big Home Depot tubs in this thread: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/viewtopic.php?t=27114 Let's say this thing is a rectangle (like a normal tank), can you put a normal tank-lid light on top? Also, can you hook up a cannister filter and heater just like a...
