I also put my water containers at room temperature and let them sit for at least a day before the water change. Unless you're dumping in 20 degree water, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Turn on hot, turn on cold, fill container, have a sammich. dsmalls, here to help! :)

I guess once you get piranhas, all tank landscaping ceases. Unless, perhaps, you get those pincher things.... A while back, I toyed with the idea of getting a piranha, but their size kinda turned me off. Very cool fish, nonetheless.

Windex and a razor blade seem to work ok. Keep the blade at a 45% angle and you won't scratch the glass.

I wonder what (if any) the ethical responsibilities of the LFS are when selling fish. Sure it's not against the law to sell a common pleco to a kid with a 5 gallon talk, but do the employees turn a blind eye against obviously wrong purchasing decisions and sell them just to make a sale? That's...

The manufacturers generally seem to overrate filters horsepower. I have a 20 gallon long, and no way would one of those dinky filters (marked for 20G) work. As it stands now, I have TWO HOB filters, turned down to about 25% flow and they've worked great for years.

I'm glad the pacu got a better home. As a side note, I wonder if the local zoo would take in large fish? Do you get visitation rights at his/her new digs?

Sorry for the semi-hijack, but how do you handle (or stop) sand from getting sucked up by the (presumably HOB filter)? Can you put some filter floss around the intake? Would you rubberband it on there?

Rated for 45 gallons, new it was around $60. I plugged it in once and decided it wasn't for me. The hosing was cut so you'd have to get a new hose, but that's it. I'd let it go for 45$ and will ship anywhere in the US for free. Not sure how payment works around here, but I suppose PayPal...

Are ice cubes out of the question? I've been doing it that way for years. When it gets very hot here, I drop 6 or so ice cubes in the tank (20 G). It doesn't effect the temperature all that much, but brings it down to a normal-ish level.
