    Mandarins and Pods

Also, one of those $20 bags of pods is probably close to one, maybe three days worth of pods. The ones I started my culture from came from Sach's Systems Aquaculture and cost around $16.95 for 30 amphipods and around $14.95 for a 200 ml bag of copepods. Each of those would be about a single...

Time to upgrade tank size: Question/Suggestions

I'd say 50 gallons is really too small for a tang, unless there's some small variety out there that I've never heard of. Tangs get big and it's just not enough swimming room or enough water volume to safely hold their bioload once they are full grown. Tangs are eating and pooping machines...

    Clownfish mating?

My clowns are a wild caught mated pair. I've yet to see mating behavior (as if I'd recognize it if I did) but the female is very protective of the male and their anemone. The female seems to feed the male by dropping food near him. The male seems kind of stupid, even for a fish. It's no...

    lionfish poison

Just curios, but what it it feel like say in comparison to a bee or hornet sting?

Have your fish ever had a disease? Yes/no submit poll.

Ich, oh, how I hate that stuff! Quarantine those fish, baby! Also, don't buy fish sold from copper treated display tanks. It hurts their immune system if they have been in it long enough, they are probably being treated for ich because they have it, and because many stores don't check copper...

What fish do YOU want in your stocking?

I just couldn't resist.......... What fish do you dream of having, perhaps to come next month in your overly large and soaking wet Christmas stocking?

    Another random thought (involving feeding)

Most of the sponges they sell are vegetable sponges or luffas, anyway. Best thing is to get real sponges for them to eat. Several varieties are available in frozen foods.

Lionfish + Porcupine Puffer = Compatible?

In what order did you introduce them into the tank and what size were they? Thanks!

Lionfish + Porcupine Puffer = Compatible?

Thanks. I was thinking more like a 150 gallon. Don't porcs get longer than a foot?

Lionfish + Porcupine Puffer = Compatible?

Can and will a lionfish and a porc puffer coexist peacefully in the same tank if it is a large enough tank? Does anyone have personal experience with this? Or if anyone has any knowledge of other fish that are pretty, cool, or interesting that can cohabit with a porcupine puffer I'd love that...

i know i already asked this but...........

Not good to put more than one pseudochromis in a tank unless it's a HUGE tank. They are very territorial with their own and similar species. A friend though since they were small he could put a small school (4) of them in his 100 gallon reef - it was awful. As soon as they were settled in a...

    What salt to use...

I've been using Coralife. It's been about $15 cheaper per bucket than the Instant Ocean. I go through a lot so it adds up. For me it might be better simply because I can afford to do more frequent water changes than if I were paying more. I also like the way it's in three resealable bags...

    Feather Duster blew his top!

Are they the same kind of featherduster? Featherdusters pop their tops when they breed. I had it happen and I freaked. Now there are hundreds of featherduster babies all over my tank. I guess it keeps them from filtering out and eating their own young while they are free swimming.

How do you prevent a crash?

How often do you test your water? What are the parameters? Protein skimmers get rid of lots of gunk that pollutes your water. Adding more inverts will INCREASE the bioload - they are creatures, too and they eat and breathe and make waste. Plants, however, do remove wastes from the water but...

How often do you do Water changes

For me, monetary value has less importance than the responsibility of providing a good home for the creatures we've yanked from the oceans for our pleasure.

    fishmate for puffer?

How much do porcs eat? I just got a 5.5" porc and while I don't want to overfeed him I don't want to starve him, either.

Do porcupine puffers leave cleaner wrasses alone?

    Blue Star Fish

I don't know if he's eating it or not but mine walks across the nori in the food clip on a regular basis and lingers there. Most of the time he just slurps around on the LR getting into shockingly tight areas sometimes.

what do i have to do to be able to get a manderin

Another good source of extra food for your mandarin is pods from the filter media of other SW tanks. I have 5 SW tanks but only one has a mandarin. I take the filter pads from all tanks and swish them in a white bowl of SW picking or flicking off the visible pods into the bowl with my fingers...

    Anemone w/ genetic defects?

Anemones breed by splitting so an inbred anemone is impossible as they are all clones of a sort to begin with. Sometimes they look a bit weird right after a split. My pink tip has a few split tips like that and it hasn't caused it any problems as far as I know. Since there's no other pink tip...

    Another shrimp dead! :(

If you plan to rely soley on water changes to maintain trace elements in your water you should be changing a lot more water a lot more frequently. As a person who's raised and bred cleaners, my experience shows me that the fry die within a few moltings without iodine supplementation and the...

Aquarium cleaner package: Good or Bad

Skip the arrow crab and the coral banded shrimp. Both can mess with corals and are known to eat small fish and other mobile inverts. But don't let that stop you from buying the package. Talk to your LFS and see if you can either get credit for or simply give them the unwanted animals. The...

    Another shrimp dead! :(

Oh, and my cleaners and fires eat pretty piggishly every day by stealing fishfood, I don't think overfeeding bothers them unless it fouls the water. I had the horrific experience of a cleaner shrimp that lost all but two of its legs in a molt. Shockingly, she survived because I learned of...

    Another shrimp dead! :(

Do you supplement the iodine? Many kinds of shrimp will die or even worse fall apart while still alive without good levels of iodine in their water.

What do you think of this setup? Will it work?

IMO plenums are a PITA. Something for experts to use if they see fit IMO.
