26 Gallon Reef: Possible / Smart?

Awesome, thanks. The anenome has stuck in a general area, but has moved vertically up and down the rock. I'm unsure what might have caused this, but I'm looking into it. Also, am at the point where I need to purchase more salt. Is it worth looking into reef crystals, or is there not a...

26 Gallon Reef: Possible / Smart?

That sounds like a good idea. I have two primary concerns. Will the rose anenome chase my corals, and is my lighting sufficient?

26 Gallon Reef: Possible / Smart?

That I understand, and I'm fine with checking water parameters. I really want a 220+, but I know that's not possible right now :D

26 Gallon Reef: Possible / Smart?

I have recently converted my tank to a saltwater tank, and, as much as I would like to increase my tank size to something 100g+, it's simply not in the cards for now. That being said, I'd really like to start a reef, and was wondering if it is advisable, and if so, how much I might need to add...

    Filefish Swimming Sideways

I recently purchased a Bristletail Filefish for my SW aquarium. He seemed to be doing fine after adding him to the tank (yesterday), but today he has been behaving strangely, hiding near my filter intake sideways. I fed the tank a frozen food cocktail (shrimp, etc), and he ate, but now as I've...

    Dwarf Hairgrass not spreading

aqua_chem, I wasn't aware of that website, but I'm quickly becoming a fan! Thanks! I'll look into a proper C02 regulator. I'm glad that something exists that I won't have to piece together myself. I'll also look into Flourish. Also, I'll double check the bulbs and report back on my lighting setup.

    Dwarf Hairgrass not spreading

Ah, understood. I'm looking into a Non-DIY setup for C02. I've been trying to figure out what light category I was in, but wasn't able to figure out what constitutes low/medium/high. Also, as far as water column ferts, are you referring to liquid additives? Thanks for your insight. I love...

    Dwarf Hairgrass not spreading

I'm not precisely sure what you mean by low tech setup. Am I missing something? I've been looking into CO2, but haven't decided on how to tackle it.

    Dwarf Hairgrass not spreading

Well, the title basically says it all. I bought a pot of hairgrass to plant in my newly converted planted tank. I'm using Seachem's Flourite Black Sand, and have planted Seachem Flourish Tabs at the base of the plant. I removed the plant and roots from the potted material prior to planting, but...

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

OK cool. I'll see if I can't track some down. Will I have any issues with ghost shrimp?

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

I see. Are these snails the same as what I've heard called nuisance snails?

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

I do have plants, but it's all new and hasn't filled out yet. Snails eat poop? Or am I misunderstanding?

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

I'll try the fork idea, although some of the detritus is in hard to reach places. :( Maybe I should have gone with the gravel instead of the sand (although, sand looks really, really nice!)

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

So, silly question: How do you go about vacuuming something like this? Fish poop is much easier to spot now...

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

Added floss to the filter, as well as the wood and rock to the tank. I also planted. Now it's just waiting for the murk to clear. :(

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

So I transfered everything out of the tank, washed the new substrate, added it after clearing the old gravel out. I went with florite black. I washed it as best I could, but my water is still super murky. Do I let it sit? Do I run my filters?

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

No worries about low light levels! The new hood is running 2 24w bulbs! Is Java moss my only option?

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

I am curious: I'd really like to do a rocky tank, but want to plant it as well. I was thinking about doing caves with some sort of moss, as I think that'd look cool. Will moss grow on artificial decorations? If so, what kind of moss should I look into?

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

I made a trip down to Salt Lake City and visited a highly reviewed LFS I'd never heard of. The guy there was extremely helpful, and I ended up with what I think was a better (read: less overkill) lighting solution for this particular tank. I'm hoping to make the transfer this weekend. :) Now to...

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

Alright, so I think I'll probably go with something like Eco-Complete. My concern now is primarily lighting. The aquarium is a 26 gallon Aqueon Bowfront, which measures 24x15x21. I'm going to have to get a custom hood made to replace the one that I have now, but that's not really an issue, just...

Month old tank shows NO signs of cycling

12/11/11: No change 12/12/11: Ammo 0 - .25 (Difficult to tell) Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0 - 5 ppm I am unsure if these readings are correct. The colors seem between any two ranges as mentioned. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

When you say wash everything in tank water, are you referring to the new substrate? I've been thinking about using pool filter sand, but I'm not sure what to use under that.

Month old tank shows NO signs of cycling

No ammonia dosing. The ammonia in the tank is fish waste. I was under the impression dosing with fish would be a bad idea.

Converting a Gravel tank to Planted: The Process

Just wondering what the process is for converting a gravel only tank to a planted substrate tank. This is a project for down the road, but I'm curious to get feelers out there so I can start my research. The aquarium is a 26 gallon bowfront with ~30 pounds of gravel (I like a thick base to work...
