Home Depot pool filter sand issue

Yep, they sell it. The bag I got when I set up my 55 is nice and white and larger grain. The bag I just picked up from the same store is a lot browner, smaller grain and really "dirty". I gave up on trying to wash that bag. The texture was more like mud. I guess the whole point of my post was to...

Home Depot pool filter sand issue

Evidently all Home Depot sand isn't the same. I'm getting things together to switch tanks from 55 to 75 gallon. I went to the same Home Depot where I had previously gotten the pool filter sand I used in my 55. I noticed that it was a lot finer grain than before and was also more brown in color...

    Clown loach tank question?

I've got 7 clowns in my 75 gallon. When I feed them cucumber, I peel a whole one 1/2 way down lengthwise, stick a fork in the side to hold it down and then put it in the tank. They will devour the entire thing overnight. All that will be left is some skin. I don't even have to microwave it. It's...

    Clown Loach

Clowns need pristine water conditions in a well established tank and are pretty sensitive to higher nitrate levels. The smaller they are when purchased, the harder it is to have them thrive and do well. I've got 6 in my 55 gal that are roughly 3 to 4 inches. I've had them for probably 6 months...

    Tank Sand

I get pool filter sand from Home Depot. Seems like it's around $5 for a 50lb bag. Not perfectly white, but still looks and works great.

    Clown loaches eating Frogbit?

Interesting, I would have never thought it could be the skirts. At any rate, I guess I won't be getting any more frogbit. That didn't last anytime at all. Thanks.

    Clown loaches eating Frogbit?

Small school of black skirt tetras, maybe a dozen peppered Cory's, and a rubber lip Pleco.

    Clown loaches eating Frogbit?

About 2 weeks ago I added some frogbit to my tank since I like the look of some floating type plants. I have clown loaches in there too and now almost all of the frogbit is gone. I assume they are the little munchers? Thanks

    Algae on hob filter

Ok, those use replaceable type cartridges. You should just swish them around in a small bucket of your tank water to remove any built up gunk. Since you running two filters, when the time comes they need to be changed, you can switch them out one at a time. I would do one then wait about two or...

Clown loaches and new bubble bar.Interesting.

I'll second that for sure. I have six clowns ranging between 3 and 4 inches. They are definitely the most entertaining and interesting fish in my tank.

    Algae on hob filter

What brand HOB are they? Filters like Aqua Clear can be set up almost like a canister filter since you can add layers of differing media. Most HOB filters use preset "cartridge" type filtering.

What kind of filter are you using now?

    Algae on hob filter

You really don't even need the carbon in there. Most people just put it in when removing meds after treating for something. You also shouldn't change the filter cartridge until it is pretty much falling apart. That's where all your good beneficial bacteria is going to be. When it is close to...

Clown loaches and new bubble bar.Interesting.

I would say they are diggin' the bubbles. If they were freaked out, I think they would be hiding somewhere.

    Fish Tank Getting Really Dirty

I had a big diatom issue in my 75 gallon fresh water tank. I also have sand. Got me 5 little oto cats and within about 4 days they had it all cleaned up. They still keep it in check too. Amazing little fish. I supplement with some zucchini since they keep it so clean. Don't want them going hungry.

    Clown loaches not acting normal

Hi Cynic and thanks for the reply. I am aware of the way they will lay on their sides and it can be disturbing to say the least. Mine have gotten to where that is about all they do now. I haven't done anything different with the tank such as rearranging or adding / removing stock. It's like they...

    Clown loaches not acting normal

About 6 weeks ago I acquired 4 small clown loaches, each about 2-1/2" long. They have all been doing great until recently. Up until about a week ago, they have all been very active and were eating great. I would drop in some algae waffers and bottom feeder pellets and they would be all over...

Those who are heavily planted / decorated

Guess I'll just keep on as I have been, cleaning around things as much as possible. I tend to stress over things I really shouldn't. Thanks so much for all the input everyone.

Those who are heavily planted / decorated

Huh, never thought of something like that. Do you have it lower in the tank or just angled so the current flows a certain way? This is a 55 gal. tank. Thanks for all the input everyone!

Those who are heavily planted / decorated

Question to those of you have heavily planted and or decorated tanks. What do you do about vacuuming the bottom of the tank? I have sand as my substrate and am heavily decorated with rocks, fake plants, live plants, etc and I find it really difficult to vacuum around all that stuff in there. I...

    Sand in freshwater tank?

Get you a 5 gal. bucket. Put a bit of sand in and then fill about 1/2 up with water. Mix the sand around in the water and let settle for 30 seconds or so and then slowly pour off the water. Some debris will go with it. Keep doing that until you get pretty much clear water and see that the sand...
