    Mass fish death!

Thank you for all your encouraging comments! I am trying to see it in as a learning experience as well. I certainly won't go doing that again! I am pleased to see that a couple of the platies survived in the big tank, and are hiding behind the filter. That cheered me up a bit.

The Fishless Cycle - with sugar???

This has turned into a very interesting chemistry debate! Fish tanks really are great for teaching about you biology and chemistry! I might keep mine for if I ever have children... though they might find any deaths upsetting, but I suppose that happens with hamsters as well!

    Mass fish death!

The old tank was functioning perfectly fine. This is why the situation is all-the-more upsetting, and it's making me feel really guilty for the poor dead fish! My parents just made me get a new one because the filter was making a really annoying, irregular, loud whirring noise, and no one...

    Mass fish death!

Dear all I am really sad about all my baby sunset platies that I have had for ages. I had to get a new tank for them because there was a problem with the old one, and given that I am not having any more babies I knew that in future it would just be a hospital tank, so I got the cheap one that...

Water from my established tank to help new tank get cycled?

Hi everyone My boyfriend is getting a fish tank (I’ve managed to infect him with the bug). I was just wondering if it’s a good or bad idea to take water from my established fish tank to put in his fish tank, so that it becomes suitable for fish sooner. Thanks guys.

Ahhhhh! Tank full of ill fish

I already put in a carbon filter the night before the catfish died. All my fish are really lethargic and hiding. As I've said, I've only a glimpse of the loach in the last week and that was yesterday when I was hoovering the tank and accidentally knocked his cave and he went streaking across...

Ahhhhh! Tank full of ill fish

Even though the medication was meant to be alright for catfish, I stopped using it the day before yesterday because I was worried about the effect it was having on my catfish. But he was dead this morning. It's very sad. He had years left in him; apparantly his type can live for 20 years...

Ahhhhh! Tank full of ill fish

Is there anything else that can cause oxygen deprivation? Does oxygen get put in the water just by the filter bubbling, or what? Cos it seems to be bubbling fine (I've been cleaning the equipment regularly, but I'd just not changed the filter material in a while, I'd just been cleaning it in...

Ahhhhh! Tank full of ill fish

Thanks for your replies. Definately meant nitrite! I use Interpet tablets for testing. Would take it to aquarium shop but they use the same means! Had it about a year, maybe more. Says on box is ok for more than 2 years. Though I have very little trust in all the water testing kits I have...

Ahhhhh! Tank full of ill fish

Oh and the feather-fin catfish seems to be moving his gills faster than normal, but I could be imagining that as well.

Ahhhhh! Tank full of ill fish

Dear all I am having big trouble with my tropical fish tank, though thankfully I have had no deaths yet. I’m hoping someone may be able to advise me on what might be wrong and what steps I should take. About two weeks ago one of my platies was acting off colour, staying at the bottom and not...

When do platies reach sexual maturity?

Hi everyone. Is anyone able to tell me when is the earliest that Sunset Platies reach sexual maturity? I need to try and do something with all the babies before that happens... Cheers, Christina.

Bent fish - strange change of shape

Thanks everyone for your help. Luckily my Dad did it for me so I didn't have to!

Bent fish - strange change of shape

Too late unfortunately. I have followed the advice of the people on here and killed it. :( :(

Bent fish - strange change of shape

The fish eats very well and picks on the smaller fish of its breed. It catches the catfish pellets on their way to the bottom and spends the next hour gradually eating it. I live away from home during the week at university so can't keep a close eye on it; I'm having to trust my parents with...

Bent fish - strange change of shape

Is the curving of the spine in my fish resemblent of those with fish TB? (The picture came out much better than i thought)! Also, is it possible that the fish has had it for a year, as it has been this bloated for ages? If the fish takes a long time to die and the disease is only contagious if...

Bent fish - strange change of shape

Yes, but other than just upsetting me about it, no one actually has any advice I can follow since I don't have the equipment to set up another tank. So i'm not any closer on what to do.

Bent fish - strange change of shape

The picture is awful, but its the black disfigured blob. I'm really upset cos I have no idea what to do. I don't have the facilities to put the tank in a quarentine of its own, and can't move the baby's into the tank as they will get eaten by the catfish and the loach (which takes about 10...

Bent fish - strange change of shape

Dear all, I have just noticed that my head-and-tail light tetra (who has always had a very odd shape due to an extremely swollen stomach - someone suggested she is 'egg-bound') has gone into a really weird shape. I can't see any body parts missing but it looks like they are because the Caudal...

Can u sell baby platies? Don't know what 2 do with them all!

I was wondering what everyone else did in this situation! Clearly the answer of taking the fish to the lfs is easier than trying to give them to people (especially when I don't know anyone with a tropical tank). I'll find out whether mine will do it. My catfish that (I think) eats the platy...

Can u sell baby platies? Don't know what 2 do with them all!

Dear all, My sunset platies keep breeding, and I don't like them to be eaten by my big catfish yet don't have enough room for them in my tank. Is there a market for them at all? Do people pay for them, or should I just give them away to good homes? If people do pay for them, how much should I...

Heron deterent that doesn't small scenery

Just a very quick note as I have just got back from a three week holiday and have tons to do: any comments are appreciated anyway by me, but may also be practically useful now since the squirty thing has stop functioning!

    Temp. for a baby fish?

Thanks for replying. The high temp. at the mo is caused by the sunlight shining through the window, so I will have to ask my mum not to open the curtains. I will move the baby's temp. down a bit. Do you think the light should be on for the same time as the mum? Cheers.

Heron deterent that doesn't small scenery

Very late reply I'm really sorry I'm saying this so late, but its got to be said (so better late than never); you all did a great job of replying with suggestions. I haven't had time to reply yet (its been on the job list every day though) but my parents and I did carefully consider what all...

    Temp. for a baby fish?

I have a little platy baby that was born last Thurs I think. I was wondering if the baby should be kept at the same temp. as you keep the adult Platy at (my tank is around 250c as it is a communal tank) or whether it should be different. At the moment the little fish is at about 300C cos of...
