Rivertanks, anyone got one or got any advice?

My kids want me to make them a river tank. I plan to use the the Rivertank Ecosystem insert. I know it's not perfect, but easier than building everything myself. Does anybody have this type of setup or any advice? I've kept aquariums for years so am not looking for basic info., just info...

    Anybody ever tried this?

I'm keeping Belonesox Belizanus and am trying to keep them in food (all they eat is live fish). I bought a refugium (made for reef aquariums) that I plan to breed guppies in. Also, pregnant mollies could give birth in. The refugium hangs on the back of the main tank, takes water from the main...

    Questions regarding pH/KH

I broke down and did some study and now have a much better understanding of pH and KH as it relates to dissolved CO2. Assuming there is a direct relationship as shown on the charts, the use of CO2 is merely a method to reduce pH while keeping KH constant (indirectly increasing dissolved CO2)...

CO2 without the bottle, regulator, etc.

I'm interested in adding CO2 to my tank, but I'm not really interested in adding a tank w/regulator, solenoid, etc. Probably my biggest reason is that I sold a nice calcium reactor when I sold all of my reef stuff. I can't bring myself to repurchase the stuff. Anyway, my tank is fish first...

    Hair algae problem

I know this is an old subject, but just wanted to know what advice is out there for a hair algae problem. Phosphates measure between 0 and .1 ppm, nitrates measure about 2.5 ppm. Iron doesn't measure at all (I plan to increase). Ammonia and nitrite are -0-. Lighting consists of two 55w...

Recommendations for a good bottom feeder ...

Any recommendations for a good bottom feeder to also help with removal of dead feeder fish (rosey reds, guppies, etc.)? My tank is a 75 gal w/ 15 gal wet-dry/sump. It is slightly brackish (about 1/2 teaspoon of salt for every gallon of water). The tank is somewhat planted (has two types of...

    Calcium in livebearer tanks

I've read and heard that many folks who breed livebearers keep high calcium levels in their tanks. I'm familiar with keeping calcium/alkalinity levels high in reef tanks, but not FW. How would one keep high ca levels in a FW tank? Also, what products are typically used and what levels does one...

Breeder tank connected to main system

I'm thinking about connecting a 15 gal breeder tank to my main 75 gal tank and the sump/wet-dry. My thought was that I would pump water into the breeder tank from the sump (probably just using 1/4" - 1/2" tubing), then connecting the 15 gal to the sump w/ a small overflow. This breeder tank is...

Simple way to cut or file glass top?

Is there a simple way to cut or file just a section of glass top? I need to work around the U-tube of my overflow. I only need a notch of about 1/2" wide and 1" long. If not the notch, I need to take about 1/2" off of the back part of the glass. Any thoughts?

Are there any good plants on the market for brackish/hardwater aquariums? I would like some floating and some anchored. I'm not trying to created a planted tank, just want to have some in the tank.

    Any freshwater innovations?

I've kept reef tanks for the last 7 years or so. I kept freshwater for a couple of years before that. Due to the lack of time I now have to spend on the hobby, I'm selling my reef livestock and hardware and going back to freshwater. I obviously know a lot more about keeping aquariums now, than I...
