    Leaf Litter

Does anyone have experience with Leaf Litter in their tanks? I hear quite a few Apisto keepers use Oak leaf litter in the tanks. I live in the country and have an Oak tree in my back yard and I am considering using the leaves in my Tiger Barb tank when they start to turn colors this fall. My...

    Juvenile Tiger Barb coloring

Hey everyone, I've recently stocked my tank with 15 juvenile Tiger Barbs (appx 1.5 cm long, standard coloring) and have a question about some spots a couple of them have. 3-4 of them have a dark spot on either side between their normal black bands. The spots are the same color as the bands...

    Carnivorous Tiger Barb

My tiger barbs are the same way. I don't feel it's a matter of aggression but more of a "cleaning".

    CO2 at local beer shop

I've talked to the local welding shop and they charge $53/year for the "rental" of the tank and then $30 for a refill. That seems slightly high compared to what everyone else pays. These are all Canadian funds.

    CO2 at local beer shop

I should mention this will be going on a 33gallon tank. I have talked to the girl at the store who didn't know much about them so i've asked her to see if she can get me a 5lb tank. I would assume these canisters would have standard connections for a regulator? Ah, yes. This would be grams. :)

    CO2 at local beer shop

My local beer and wine making shop has 250g CO2 bottles for $40 purchase and a $5 trade/refill. If my math is correct, that makes it a half an lb bottle of CO2. Would this bottle work with a CO2 regulator and how long would it last?

I WANT a noisy tank (in my bedroom) - hardware suggestions

I will also recommend the HOB Aquaclears. I have an Aquaclear 500 (aka 110) and it does have a "babbling brook" sound which is nice as white noise. The other option is anything with a bio wheel.

    Some basic q's

I ended up getting into fishkeeping because I was hired, without experience, to work the fishroom of a petstore. The more I learned, the more I hated working there because I could see how they didn't truly care about the fish. It pushed me to make our offerings better and to educate customers...

Not so new, and not so huge tank that I may set up...

A full grown pleco can measure anywhere from 15 to 24 inches in length and can live up to 20 years. It's a misconception that they will not outgrow a tank, because they will. :) They generally create more waste than they're worth.

New Filter + Water Cylcing Q

If the UGF is really dirty, it can have anaerobic pockets of ammonia which can kill your fish if they're disturbed. I'd recommend removing it if your fish dig up the substrate, or if you do w/ a gravel cleaner.

    New tank cycling

Your ph should be fine at your range as long as you acclimate your fish instead of simply adding them to the tank. Also, you don't want to do any water changes during a (fishless) cycle as it will simply make the cycle take longer to complete.

    New tank cycling

You'll find the majority of members here will recommend Fishless Cycling. Ammonia is deadly to fish, and will seriously damage their gills. The chlorine and chloramine remover will not eliminate ammonia. http://www.aquariumadvice.com/article_view.php?faq=2&fldAuto=15...

    stocking tips

What I would recommend is doing a Google search for any of the fish you are interested in. You will get a lot of good information. Also, Aquarium Advice has a very nice fish profile section with good information there as well. http://www.aquariumadvice.com/profiles/

    My new 55g tank :)

I'll add to the tiger barb recommendation above me. I love Tiger Barbs. To me, they are the single most entertaining fish you can have. They get a bad wrap because they're added to tanks that they shouldn't be in. I had a 33g with all Tiger Barbs (plus utility fish) and it was one of the...

    Silicone Peeling

Hey everyone. I picked up a new 33g tank from a co-worker and i've now got it stripped down for cleaning before I start to cycle, however I noticed something I might be worried about. A 1" peice of silicone on the bottom of the tank is lifted up and down't seem to be connected. However, the...

New, and HUUUUGE, tank to set up...

I am a huge fan of a Tiger Barb species tank so I will recommend considering them. One giant school of Tiger Barb and then your cleanup crew. Ottos, Corys, MTS etc. Tiger Barbs are very fun and energetic fish. They'll happily entertain anyone who will spend a moment in front of the tank. I...

    help !!

To put it bluntly, your setup is not sufficient for what you have. Below is an example of how large a goldfish can get. Also, goldfish are coldwater fish and Bettas are warmwater. They are from two completely different environments. It would be like putting a Polar Bear and a Panda Bear in the...

    nipped!!!

That depends on the fish you have in your tank and how many there are per school. Some fish are not destined to be together so you have to do some research before you stock the tank. For example, Tiger Barbs can be nippy towards fish like Gouramis and Angels as they have long flowing fins. You...
