I got the aqueon 29 gallon kit for christmas its a great starter kit and decent size. Your pleco should do much better in there along with a few other fish :) soon mine will be stocked with 7 tiger barbs, a rainbow shark, and a sailfin pleco

I've always been a fan of the white sand, thats what i put in my 29 gallon and it looks great almost natural especially with the LEDs and blacklight, Id imagine it would be easier to clean because you can see debris better

I agree with doing a 100% water change to get rid of the ammonia you already put in there. If you cant find the Ace Hardware stuff you can also go with Blue Ribbon Clear Ammonia shake it and no bubbles. I've read on a few forums people have had luck with both of those. Also remember, BE PATIENT...

You can also look for Blue Ribbon clear ammonia, does not bubble when shaken and has been used by many including myself for a fishless cycle
