I'm not new to the liquid ferts but as a dwarf blue crayfish breeder/wish-they-would-breed, I can't use the off the shelf iron or copper based fertilizer as they will really hurt the little guys- need to check out flourish and the tabs. A little hesitant as I just lost a female for no known...

Yup, they grow like nuts but a few months later, and countless water changes at 10-30% and they slow down. Sad face, but I'm getting some fert. tabs as everyone swears by them.

    Gravel/substrate help & opinions plz

It really is a big decision, considering once everything has stabilized you won't be changing it without some load of trouble. Take time, visualize- keep in mind the vacuum will come into play (perhaps) so something that stays down while cleaning is more than a little important!!!

Hmmmm... I still am looking at photos of tanks to refill my crayfish-eaten moss and why they go clipping leaves off the red Wendi. I will never get it. I need a fast grower and your suggestion has me on the watch. Hearty+fast growing+unique=in my tanks! Thanks.

    Gravel/substrate help & opinions plz

I have had insane good luck with carib substrate. The gravel/sand mix is perfect for roots -if planted tank is your dream- and yes, the nutrients will go away in time but the ease of planting by holding the root with your thumb and index finger, then quickly moving the gravel/sand with your...

Are you obsessed with your tanks

Aquariums are like Tylenol, one is fine but you want 3. I started out digging out my old 55g. That week a 21g and a 4g were in the picture. Granted the 4g has 1 fish in it, and a hob, a heater, air stone and proper substrate- no matter...once an aquarist, your counter space will decrease as...

I was just looking at that same plant earlier- it is totally beautiful, and why do more people not have it? The general needs were that of a semi-hearty with great dimension and even changes shape depending on the cooler or warmer the water it's living in right? Nice pick, I have my eye on some...

I thought that my post was explaining flourish(ing) -great product- and surviving...? Anybody? Well the carpets online are typically as polished as some photos I had to work on in photoshop, and even so- carbon, being the basis of all life and building block here on earth, will help anything in...

I forgot to mention, yup- almost any plant will grow at accelerated rates compared to non co2 to a point, as some plants need very little light and little co2- when adding more light/co2 this may in fact may be bad... Just know the plant, the levels of what it needs and -stay within a range of...

I can only imagine what roots would do to an U.G.F. With plants use a H.O.T or canister, I have seen some fluval brand in tank with 3 stage filtration that looked interesting.

The runners are just fantastic to keep procreation... I almost think some of those strips are too this as the thickness of my w. tropica runners are a good 1/16" thick and went threw a small area of a net pot which they were living in for a few weeks. These plants were made to survive, though I...

Using the method of gravel over plant substrate, a reduction of plant cover is, in my application, working very well.

Those are certainly the best choice, but in my tank, after receiving a package of plants which were lost in the mail for a month- I had minimal light, no co2 and after a simple dose of fertilizer- they had grown nearly an inch and a half in less than a day.

A good way to keep the "messy" plants ie mosses and, well almost every aquatic plant I suppose, is to get a good nutrient-rich substrate with the areas you rather not have huge amounts of plants covered with same colored gravel- that's what I am doing as I want my Xmas moss to go certain places...

Help! Nooobie Here- do I NEED Co2?

No, it's not - all is crystal clear now. A little from here than some from there and all of the sudden, years of unexplained algae blooms explained!

    Ammonia not dropping :(

A quick question for this topic and to add, I am finding unusually high amounts (unusual, though I have never checked it before...hmm) of ammonia in tap water with a pure built in system the drinking water STILL tests high for ammonia. Something is odd.

    Ammonia not dropping :(

Well it may be due to not only the most obvious and true, 55g is going to be the "old truck" it takes a bit for the heat to work and takes a while for that smell of exhaust out but it is big, it will take time for anything to happen- as you said about your (did you like my old truck metaphor?)...

    Silicon available in UK shops?

SILICONE ?'s PLEASE READ on many "safe for aquarium" silicone compounds, there was a warning in tiny letters which reads "not for use on aquariums 30 gallons or more" General rule, buy the supplies for which your project calls for from a store that stocks and specializes in said needs. On the...

    Ammonia not dropping :(

I agree, now with 4 various aquariums in diff states of maturity, the "quick start your tank" liquids really are for the minority and harms the natural balance that just takes time to develop. In retrospect I lost fish (died not lose) using the quick starters. They were test fish to see if the...

Totally genius idea, really. Shhhhhhh or the aquarists will drive the price up! Supply and demand!!

    Wood for tanks??

I started the soaking thins as the stone was from my previous reef tank and wanted the salt to wash off. Granted a bit brackish will be ok yet I would prefer to control it over the residue from limestone and live rock. I just find it amazing that I see tannin from a piece of wood that was...

    Wood for tanks??

I never thought of blasting sand- I'm still at the "what substrate to use, and what color" I thought of going with a black -can't remember the manufacturer- round gravel with "paths" of white sand looping around would look stunning. I'm aquaticscaping novice #1 but a forest scene with pathways...

    Wood for tanks??

Just now am I actually optimistic of getting clean, clear water tomorrow. It's taken days and days but it is beginning to have almost no color and the 30 min. intervals regimen sounds perfect- hang in there and eventually it really will stop. I honestly doubted it, shame on me.

    Wood for tanks??

I own cabins up by lake michigan, and those driftwood pieces are free. Naturally I start a project that needs what I cannot get because of the time started! I need less tea. Oh well there is a reason, if none found it gets tossed in the junk-

    Wood for tanks??

That could be the issue- I'm doing it every few hours but regardless, the longer you boil the darker it gets so it can only reabsorb a tiny amount, as it has looked like dark tea one time I was preoccupied and let it go for 6 hours- I know the fibers open and the process, it must be the type of...
