    Check out my clam.......

I have two of the dimmable taotronics that you hear so much about on this forum. They do work great. My tank is 24 deep and my lights are about 8" above the water line. I recently found a chip of monti in the corner on the sand and all it's polyps were out and happy. So far the clam has been...

Here's a question that I would like answered. I feed BRS reef chili to my corals. Will that work for the clam? Target feed it?

Pictures really can't capture their really beauty! They are fantastic. Now I just need to grow it until it is a foot across. Lol, maybe getting a Lil ahead of myself considering I've had her for all of 3 hours.

    Check out my clam.......

Just picked this Maxima up today for $65. Gonna name her Pearl. Never seen a brighter blue color. Really excited. Any experiences with these. I placed her on a small piece of lr rubble so when she grabs on I can still move her around. Right now I have her on the sand as she adjusts to...

    Cichlids in a classroom

That is exactly why I want it? I think there is a lot of value in stuff like this for students that isn't measurable.

    Cichlids in a classroom

What kind filtration should I be using? Is a canister necessary or would a hob be enough? What water tests would I need to do for a lake Malawi setup? PH, Kh..... Anything else?

    Cichlids in a classroom

Probably a 55g just cause they are so cheap and my school is fitting the bill. My school will support me on it a little. The maintenance staff will help with feedings during vacations. Are cichlids that sensitive that I should fear small fluctuations over breaks etc. ? Taking them home is out...

    Cichlids in a classroom

So, as you may guess based on the name I teach biology in a high school. I spend a fair amount of time on this site on the saltwater side for a tank at home. I am venturing to the freshwater side of the aisle becauseI have a student that is offering me some yellow lab cichlids. I am considering...

    Doug's 250, now 300, in wall build

Vacuuming the sand is an interesting topic. Some say don't do it. Others say you should. Where does everyone stand on this? I never have in the year I've had my tank but I definitely think it is harboring some nutrients. Is it ok to start vacuuming if I never have and how would I go about it...

    Candy cane parasite?

Any thoughts folks? Does anyone know of any good dip products besides iodine. I am afraid that iodine could damage the coral.

    Candy cane parasite?

Here's a pic. The little dark spot is the hole where the mystery guest pops out of. You can see how the head is misshaped.

    Candy cane parasite?

I bought a candy cane frag a couple months back. it started with 3 heads and it has split to 4 so far. One of the original 3 heads had what looked like another mouth off the side of its head so I thought it was splitting. On closer inspection there appears to be something living in the hole. It...

    Confirming Coral ID

I know I was just letting him acclimate. I am going to move him up slowly. I have a plate monti that is about 6" from the surface that seems quite happy there.

    Confirming Coral ID

Yeah the sps definitely had better color at the store, but that picture is just a couple minutes after a dip and drop to a new tank. His polyps are more open now and his color is improved though not yet back to how it looked at the store. Hopefully it will continue to improve.

    Confirming Coral ID

Just got home from the lfs….actually a new one. For those of you in Chicago, The Living Sea is really awesome! I am somewhat of a noob (about a year) but that place blows my lfs away! Anyway, I grabbed a couple things from the frag tank and want to confirm their identity before I go learn all...

    DanS Future 90 gallon reef

I just almost bought a Christmas wrasse for my tank last week. I talked with the guys at the store and they steered me after from it and toward a solar fairy wrasse. The said that the Christmas is a more aggressive and if you wanted to add other wrasses later it could be an issue. They said that...

    Closed Corals

Also if you just did an adjustment it will take them a while to get happy again. How much of an adjustment was this? I have been told that when adjusting salinity you shouldn't move it more than .003 in a 24 hour period. Too quick a change is never good. If you went .005 in one change they...

    Closed Corals

My candy cane heads definitely take on the 8 shape when splitting but they don't close up on me. I can't speak for yours though. I don't have either of those.

The chaeto does look pretty brown in that pic. I usually have little bits that turn brown and die but never the whole ball. Sorry if I missed this earlier cause I just joined in, but what type of light is in your fuge?
