    Vacuuming question

I vacuum every water change, because that’s the way I was taught. I put nothing on the tube; I’m just careful where I’m vacuuming. I do a 10% change every 2 weeks (also the way I was taught) and this keeps a very nice, clean, healthy tank.

    Need Reef Tank Recommendations!

I have a reef tank, all told close to 50 gal., but part of that is in a DS refugium (deep sand refugium). I highly recommend a DS for a reef tank for the health of the tank. However, I would venture to say that “low maintenance” and “reasonable price” ought never to be used in the same sentence...

    Light Advice

Thanks everyone for the advice. @54seaweed, is it automatic, or do you have to manually do it? Currently, have a day/night power strip. Pumps are of course on permanently on. Lights in the display come on during the day, and lights in the DS refugium at night.

    Light Advice

iPhone app would be nice, but not critical. What I would really like it to do is mimic natural light cycles, not a binary on/off — so, looking at a fade in/fade out.

    Light Advice

Well, I wasn't wanting to spend more than a $100, but seems like that's probably a pipe dream. I ended up spending $100 on a Fluval, that wasn't actually what I wanted, but didn't want the fish to suffer while I made up my mind, and saved up $$.

    Light Advice

This week, my lights went out for good. I'm wanting to upgrade to LED (previous were tube). On a limited budget, but still want to make sure I do what's best for the fish/coral. Any advice? Space for the lights on the display is 24x10.5. The lights over the DS refugium are fine, so I'll...

    Day / Night Cycle

That makes sense. So the longer winter cycle is actually normal for them, than our short daylight cycle.

    Day / Night Cycle

That's good advice, and I'll go ahead and do that, but I was wondering mainly for the health of the fish, for the simulation of the natural environment. Any thoughts on that, anyone?

    Day / Night Cycle

Should I adjust the day / night cycle based on time of year? It is now winter and the day cycle is coming on when it is still dark outside and staying on after the sun has gone down.

How many fish in my 55?

I had heard that 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons was a good rule of thumb, rather than going by number of fish (which goes back to the "everything poops" and bigger fish poop more idea). I have a 26 gal front and a 18 refugium, and I'm pretty sure mine is maxed, too. It's a pretty stable...

    Deadly Chocolate Chip Starfish?

Thanks for the warning! I got one at the pet store tonight. I told them everything I have in my reef tank and they assured me that it would be compatible. I have lots of snails, live coral, and anemones — he would have had a feast in there over night.

Advice Please on Compatibility with Current Tank Residents My LFS is having a sale this wknd: 20-60% off, so I'm thinking about adding 1-2 fish to replace the 2 that did not fare well in a 20 mile tank move.

    Newbie with Reef Aquarium

I am a newby on the site, and to fish husbandry. I have a 26 gal reef with fish, anemones, choral, and such, with an 18 gal. deep sand refugium. It was given to me last weekend by a friend who is moving to New York. This is the first aquarium I have ever had. So, I am totally new to...
