What focal length macro lens do you use?

I'm a nikon shooter myself so I'm not fully familiar with Canon but I don't think there's any bad macro lenses on the market today.

some small folk from my tank

Way I always take my pictures. D300 + 100mm tokina macro on a tripod with a 3 way head but with all three axis of the tripod lose so it can move. SB-600 connected to the camera with a cable. Flash in my left hand, position as needed, camera controlled with my other hand. For each of these...

To buy co2 system or not?

It all depends. If you're impatient or you want super dense then yes, CO2 makes sense. It's perfectly possible to do planted without though

What focal length macro lens do you use?

It depends on how old and what you want to do exactly. For the local aquarium the 50 may be better, for your own tank a 100 would do better. I find public aquariums a rubber lens hood helps, you canget really close to the glass and cut out reflections

Progressions to My 5 Gallon: Run-off from "Micro fish for a 5 Gallon?"

I suspect the CPDs will be pretty pale in this setup. Personally this plastic-only is not my thing at all!

    Where to get driftwood?

2-3 lower PH that's impressive. For that to happen you must have a very low buffer. Valid point though that I overlooked. I've got quite pure water of a consistent ph of 8. With blackwater species I grab every option I have to lower PH. If you already have low PH then adding leaking wood to...

    Where to get driftwood?

Tannins are bad for the tank that's a common fable. Granted, they give a colour to the water. However, it depends what you're after. Quite a few of the popular species from South America and Asia come from slow to medium moving water where half the jungle drops in the water and rots. With some...

    Where to get driftwood?

Not pine, not cedar, nasty resins in those. The wood you can buy in any decent fish store is not going to rot, the wood you collect yourself will.

shameless copy of dennerle's moss wrapped bamboostick

It's sold here in garden centers to use as plant supports. The cheapest ones aren't even treated. These had been lying around in my garden for months so they were washed by the rain. Even so I rinsed them well with boiling water before I started the project. The shrimp were all over them...

shameless copy of dennerle's moss wrapped bamboostick

I liked the look of these things and my dad was kind enough to give me a few handfulls of willow moss. So I dediced to do some experimenting. Bamboo stick I had lying around just like some fishing nylon. I'm counting on these to grow out a bit more, we'll see what happens. For now the shrimps...

some small folk from my tank

The first one is a Trigonostigma hengeli, possibly a female. It's certainly the biggest fish in my tank. Second one is boraras brigittae Third one is boraras merah The latter two are difficult to tell apart and very often mislabled in the trade. Fortunately for me these two species get along...

    neon tetras being aggressive, help!

I see that aquarium salt come up in a lot of American aquarium discussions. Why is that? Over here in the Netherlands it's only the brackish that mess with it.

    Inverts for 5 gallon?

Brighter coloured shrimps attract more attention. You hear all sorts of reports on bettas, I suspect personality is involved. Snails are safe with a betta. On the invert-only tank, if you can keep water clean and stable then pretty much anything from the neocaridina family is possible. Start...

    hi from the Netherlands

Hi everyone, I was looking for a nice aquarium forum and found this site. I've been enjoying the hobby since my early teens. Currently running a 60 liter heavily planted tank with shrimp, 2 species of micro rasbora and half a dozen Trigonostigma hengeli. I'm also contemplating my first pico tank.
