Your mum won't let you sell them or take them to someone who can actually care for them, yet she isn't too bothered about killing them, which I might add is more cruel than keeping them in a tank that is too small for them, which...     Other than getting a larger aquarium, There is nothing else you can do, stating the obvious, but you can't stump growth without being cruel... So a 60gal is the way to go for rift lake! All the best

    male or female bristle?

    Looks like a female to me, lack of bristles. You say 3 inch? Can't guarantee until slightly larger but looks female at this stage.

    I see you have cryptocornes, usually hardy plants, possible your platys... Just a thought, have you checked for snails?

    Furthermore, fin rot tends to show a white outline, just keep an eye on it.

    You say parasites on the discus? What kind of parasite? If this is so, may be stress, and the poo tends to be red as long as it is not blood red and a sort of brown/ red. May be worth varying the diet a bit.

    As juveniles no more than 5, but there will never be true agreement on anything involving fish, but my discus grew up in a 350 trigon, only to be moved into a 740 litre after 18 months. I had 7 in the 350 so juveniles are ok in smaller aquaria. Again, it is only my personal opinion, the bigger...

    I did not say they cannot survive in hardwater, however they thrive in soft water due to their natural habitat being soft water. Was only a suggestion. I apologise, 52 Gallon (Imperial)

    Further to that point I personally would not keep discus in a 44 Gallon due to the fact that they are a schooling fish that ideally should be kept in larger groups than you would be able to fit into a 44 Gallon. My advice is to stick with smaller colourful south american cichlids if you want...
