    ID crab!

I had a crab exactly like this in my tank. I saw it yesterday - was planning to remove it before adding more corals - and today I saw it reach out and grab my new baby Flame Angel. I Had no idea that they would actually grab a swimming fish. The fish was about 1 1/2 inches long. Killed...

    Ph question

I haven't posted here for a really long time. :) My son got sick and took me away from my tanks. But now we're back in the game. The tanks never went away..... just got less attention. :) Anyway - I find, for me, that my pH is highly dependent upon my salt choice. i.e. I have one tank...

My New Saltwater Venture...Comments, Advice welcomed

Well, OK.... but it doesn't seem like you have a cycle going on - so either you managed to have a 6 day cycle, you somehow had enough base bacteria in sand/water to balance out the introduction of your live rock, it really was "cured", or ? - If it was me, I would test it out still by adding...

My New Saltwater Venture...Comments, Advice welcomed

Hmm...it sounds to me like maybe the live rock already was cured - if you bought it from a LFS, the type they already have sitting in large vats or tanks, then it easily could have been already cured. The "new" rock that is just freshly shipped in is considered to be almost always uncured. You...

    missing in action gobie

It's amazing how well fish can hide sometimes. Sometimes people tempt the fish out with brine shrimp - although it is not the most nutritious for regular meals. Hope you and the little goby are good friends one day!

    missing in action gobie

Not sure what kind of goby you have - but many of the sand sifters eat a mixed diet - mysis shrimp/spectrum pellets/algae - formula 1/2 - hopefully he turns up for you soon. :)

Help setting up 10 gallon saltwater hospital tank as cheap but effective as possible

Just a couple of thoughts (from a mom): I find that fish in quarantine/hospital tanks require a lot of observation - and I do a lot of my observing after my children have gone to bed - so I would personally hesitate to keep in the child's room. Also, many sick fish don't survive - and if my 5...

    power compacts

I haven't posted here for a couple of years.... thought I would chime in, though. I've done two things in the past to add extra light to my 100 gal: One was to remove the cover from part of the tank and use an old light fixture from a previous tank in addition to the one I was using. The double...

    Coral Bleauty with flukes?

I've been out of the loop/hobby for quite a few months recently... but now have re-established my tank and was just starting to stock it again. My coral beauty angel had what appeared to be marine velvet, but when I did a fresh water dip (per WWM recommendations), I saw a bunch of things come...

    hair algae

So I hear re: the mangroves, but I've looked at that hair algae for quite a while now and didn't change anything else. Who knows?

    hair algae

I have been a little too busy and have not maintained my tank well over the past 6 months or so... during which I developed a severe problem with red hair algae, some cyano also. I decided to try an ebay purchase "red mangrove pods", which are little plants I put in my sump. I put them in less...

mantis shrimp beat up my hammer coral?

Today I saw that in two areas, the hard skeleton of my hammer coral was broken off. The largest broken area is about one inch in diameter, and extends in less then 1/2 inch. My husband indicated that he noticed a smaller segment yesterday, and today it was tripled in size. Otherwise, this...

I have these things that look like small trees

I have the same on my rock. I believe they are a type of Bryozoan. Best pictures I have been able to find: http://www.civgeo.rmit.edu.au/bryozoa/cheilostomata/candidae/candspa.html http://www.civgeo.rmit.edu.au/bryozoa/cheilostomata/candidae/candara.html...

    red walking stick bug?

I'm hunting for him now... Should have pulled him out when I first saw him. I read somewhere that an "infestation" can be disastrous... so maybe I'll move the rock around to find him this weekend. Do you really want it if I find him?

    CA and Alk

There is a recommendation on wetwebmedia for using a kalkwasser "slurry" as one form of dosing kalkwasser, which I happen to like also. I found it very helpful for the Ca and Alk. Recently I changed salt from IO to Coralife and now my Ca and Alk are much higher without the addition of kalk.

    flow

I think it is better to have 2 powerheads, unless you also have a sump with a return that is creating flow also.

    Red or Blue?

My understanding is that Scarlet crabs do grow quite a bit larger, but for me have been the longest survivors. Mexican red crabs stay small. Most of the common blue crabs stay small, although I have an Electric Blue that is large.

    Dying snails?

Have you tried different sources of snails also - for the new ones you purchase? I recently beefed up my cleaning crew when I enlarged my tank, and I found dramatic differences in the liveliness of stock depending upon source.

    red walking stick bug?

I have some new LR from gulf-view.com, which is 1000 better than my other new LR from liveaquaria.com..... I found an insect-looking creature, approx 2 cm in total length, red, with 6 legs I believe. The body and legs were all extremely thin, so I thought it was red algae until it started...

    Powerhead placement

    Powerhead placement

After your tank is up and going, you will be able to see where the currents are. But, for the most part, your general positioning looks good. If it was me, I would have two at the top to break up the water (assuming you are not using a sump with a return), and then you can put a third...

Opinion on tank inhabitants? Maroon clown/mandarin?

I was thinking live rock for the QT if I needed to keep them there past the 4 week mark. (You indicated keeping them there for a few months until they pair up?) I find watching all the numbers in a QT very stressful, so I don't think I could do it with just PVC more than 4 weeks. I looked at...

Opinion on tank inhabitants? Maroon clown/mandarin?

That's an interesting idea. I do have a 30 gal quarantine tank, which I suppose should work, don't you think? I really have enough live rock at this point to support both tanks, I think, so that shouldn't be too difficult. I suppose there would not be anything else for me to do to encourage...
