Peyton, if your African Fern is Bolbitis heudelotii (I am pretty sure it is), in case you don't know you can attach those rhizomes to mesh on the sides or filter pipes or something and get a nice canopy going. I think such a layout would be a great column/hex tank. Great tank already!

This was an experimental tank (NH3/4 dosing, extremely soft water, etc) with that exact same hood and an all daylight bulb. I think once switching the bulb your lighting is adequate for most anything you could want to grow in a 10, fwiw.

The NH3/4 spike is golden goodness to your plants! Densly plant and this is the period where folks see the kind of growth they've not seen before (assuming they have not used nutrient-rich acidic soil before).

If its started melting, fwiw I don't know of any method that will stop it. Its just leave alone and pray it grows back. (And if it does, you'll get a bush there instead of a single plant.) Mysterious Downoi melt is probably why some people consider it a difficult plant when in reality it is...
