    Heater broke???

The tank is 55 gal, 275 W. The ambient room temp also plays a big role. If you keep your house on the warmer side you won't need as big of a heater. If the heater is heating too high, turn the gauge down and it won't heat as often.

    Heater broke???

The heater size isn't a problem. It is recommended to aim for 5 W per gal. Don't go by the temp on the heater, go by the thermometer in the tank. Was the tank cycled before adding the fish?

    Home made Python questions

No, it doesn't flow water into the tank. The Python has a switch that siphons water out of the tank. It takes about 30 minutes from start to finish to drain and fill the 55 and 29 gal tanks with a 50% change.

    Home made Python questions

When I shut off the faucet the hose stops draining. It may be because of the fact that the faucet is higher than the tank. The faucet has to be running for me to be able to drain the tank.

    Fishes die #243243124532543

It doesn't matter that the ocean is bigger than an aquarium. There are countless documented cases of fish being released into the wild from a home aquarium and causing havoc on the ecosystem in which they were released. It is not good practice to release captive fish, period. Any LFS worth...

The Garden Hose is fine for emptying but if used for refilling make sure the hose is drinking water safe.

    Tap Water Parameters

Your tap has 40-80 ppm of Ammonia?

    Tap Water Parameters

Are you sure the reading was 1? It could be chlormaines in the tap. Fill a cup of water and treat with dechlor that removes chloramines. Stir, wait a while then re-test. See if the ammonia level is reduced

    Inch Per Gallon

This is why the inch per gal guideline isn't followed all the time. It depends on the type of fish in question. Some fish, like Bala's, require larger tanks due to their adult size and aggression. Same with African Cichlids. You could theoretically keep a 5" African cichlid in a 5 gal tank...

    aggression

Yes, they look like they are being electrocuted or having a seizure. That is a mating ritual. The female and male swim in a circle. The female shaking to release the eggs, the male shaking to fertilize. Then the female goes back around again and picks the eggs up in her mouth. Don't worry, she's...

    Cheap fish.

Feeders around here are typically 10 cents a piece or less. I hope this site can be beneficial to those that have to pay the higher prices.

    Please be kind...

When it comes to "man made" species, some get very opinionated about the subject. I just wanted to assure you that if it gets out of hand we will take appropriate measures.

    aggression

With the water chemistry issues, add some Texas Holy Rock or Limestone to the tank. It will gradually increase the hardness and pH of the water. You can also add a bag of crushed coral to the filter if you don't want the added rocks in the tank. The coral and rocks are natural pH boosters...

    Inch Per Gallon

I think it is fine for small fish like Tetras but is by no means a way to live by. There are too many variables to be considered. You could either severly overstock a tank or understock depending on the fish chosen.

    aggression

I have read it too in several places but based on my experience with my individual tank, overcrowing always led to more aggression. But that's with my specific tank. With Africans, nothing is every concrete and you have to try different avenues to determine what is best for your particular...

I'm not sure why you would get blasted for admiring the flowerhorn cichlid. It is a man made cross breed but if it does occur, the thread will be locked so don't worry about that. I do not have experience with the Flower Horn so I can't give first hand experience. But I do know that they...

    aggression

I don't really subscribe to the "overstocking helps" theory when it comes to aggressive fish. I actually understock and give each fish their own territory. The filtration doesn't dictate the amount of fish you can have in the tank IMO. There is still fish waste in the tank and when you add...

    why.....?

I agree with Mud. It could have been any number of things. Acclimation, already a weak fish, shock, etc. If it was contamination the other fish should be showing ill signs. 2 hours isn't that long to be in a container of that size. Should they have been in larger? Yes. But it just doesn't seem...
