    Betta with eye issues

These are photos of his eyes now. They aren't that great, but perhaps someone can tell me if they look like pop eye is starting and whether or not I should medicate him now. The last photo is the before photo. The major difference is that they look larger and there is a lot of blue in them...

    Betta with eye issues

Here is a before photo. This was taken in September. He was treated in early August for pop eye in one eye. It had cleared up.

    Betta health

Hornwart is a great floating plant. It would provide excellent cover for fry. The betta most likely will eat fry, unless they are super fast. I've only seen guppy fry, so I have no idea what Molly fry are like. The other poster was right, male Bettas take care of their own fry, not the female...

    Substrate for Cories?

I'm so glad that worked out for you! Looks terrific! Love the rasboras... Your fish will be happy in their sand box.

    Plants are dying

I have read that about Indian almond leaves. It seems like it would take a lot of work to maintain the ph with those though. I'm glad my drift wood doesn't alter the ph.... It leaches a ton of tannins and has been for months now.

Help! Power is out and my tanks need help

Sorry to hear that! How frustrating to feel so helpless... Sounds like you did all you could. I hope your power comes back soon!

    Plants are dying

It must depend on the type of driftwood because mine did not alter the ph at all either. Some of my plants are beginning to die off as well... Some are doing great...

    Betta health

I think it's fine to try, like someone said, do it when you are home all day to observe. I have a male betta in a 20 long with 6 cories and 8 yellow phantom tetras. They have been together since early August. Not one fish has been nipped and there were no signs of aggression from the start...

Do I dare... get a dwarf gourami?

About the tetras and sensitive fish... I had 5 neon tetras after getting 3 cories. It lasted a week, two died after a day and when there were 3, one went nuts and started chasing the others. I was planning to get more, but a few days after that they all had ich. I marched back to the store and...

    Betta with eye issues

I have had this betta since mid July. A few days after I got him I noticed his left eye was swelling, turning milky and had a discharge. I'm still not sure if the cause was an injury or if it was poor water quality in the cup. I changed his water every other day, but to do so, I put him in his...

    Substrate for Cories?

I combined sand and gravel by pushing all of the gravel off to one side and across the back. I then put the sand on the bare bottom in the section I created. The gravel mixed a bit with the sand, but they are separate for the most part. All of my bb were in the gravel, so I didn't want to get...

    What's wrong with my fish?

My betta had this when I got him. I used kanaplex, two rounds. It was pop eye. His eye got milky, there was a discharge and it started to swell. It was in one eye only and seemed to get better. Now, four months later, both eyes seem to be slightly swollen. I'm not sure if it's coming back or if...

    40-80 ppm nitrate...?

Maybe call your water company. I called mine when I started seeing ammonia in my water. They were very excited to talk to me and gave me all kinds of pointers about water. Perhaps they can tell you if they are doing anything different or of there was a lot of biological activity lately. Are you...

It can't take as long the second time- fishless cycle log

Wow! I was thinking of what people would do if the power goes out... Yikes! Did you end up getting hit hard?
  15. Ahisma

    Would you?

Serpae tetras are evil! I saw them attacking cories in a Petco!
  16. Ahisma

    Would you?

I have had a very positive experience with my male plakat betta in a 20 gallon with 8 yellow phantom tetras and 7 cories. If you have just a 10, then ottos would be better than cories. As for the tank setup, I have floating plants for cover, lots of other plants and driftwood that provides...

It can't take as long the second time- fishless cycle log

Hmmm... I think you had too much ammonia in your water, but your tank is actually cycled. Good call to change most of the water! Did you ever check your nitrates? I bet you had nitrates through the roof, which would cause the ph crash. I think your fish will do just fine! If your tap water...

    Green algae problem

Will assassin snails eat algae? Ok, so I finally got the snail explosion... I was hardly feeding the fish and still a snail explosion... So never mind about the ramshorns.

It can't take as long the second time- fishless cycle log

Wow... It is taking way too long! Are you consistently adding small amounts of ammonia, or are you just adding a few drops and waiting days before adding more? Could be that the bacteria is not able to steadily adapt to the fluctuations of ammonia. Maybe it's cycled, but going through a...

    Green algae problem

If its still a problem, ramshorn snails will work wonders! They come in beautiful colors: blue, purple, pink... I'm stuck with brown leopard print. My fish must be eating their eggs, as they are not breaking fast in my tank. I remove eggs and any baby snails that I see. I figure an assassin...

    Green algae problem

Does anyone recommend turning off the light for a few days? Because you have a window, would getting a background help shade the back of the tank from the sunlight? I had a horrible algae problem as well. Probably the same kind... Dark green, thin layer, carpet-like. I had to turn the light...

First problem with new tank set up.

I agree with what the others are saying. I think you can fit two filter cartridges in the filter, so you can put the new one after the old one, in the direction of the water flow. This will push bacteria on to the new filter. Also, you can add a piece of filter media in the filter compartment...

It can't take as long the second time- fishless cycle log

Wait, what is your ammonia at now? I would not do a water change in the 20 gallon. It will only slow your cycle. If you are talking about the 10 gallon, then yes, change some water for the betta. How much ammonia are you adding daily? . Did you stop adding ammonia? I guess it still takes a...
