Long time no post for me. I have 3 planted tanks that have been active for years as generally community tanks. Two are now guppy tanks, and the third....I decided to try shrimp (with some cory). After a couple of weeks, I still have live shrimp in the tank....but it seems like many have died...

Well......I still can't find any good "dither" fish to hang out near the top of the aquarium... Oh well..... I've done a few more changes to the tank, added more shells, added a few plants. I might add one more plant, but I think I'm just about done for now. Don't want it to get too...

How long has your aquarium been running? Is the water clear? Is there debris floating around? Are the water tests showing up as "o.k"? If you answered Yes to the last three questions......you have enough filtration. :D

Ahh. How do you keep that piece of styrofoam from wanting to float? What type of anchoring was done? And one more question.....do the fish peck at it? Thanks. :D

That's a pretty cool idea, but I'd still have to drain that tank and somehow slide it out far enough to scrape all the paint off. I'm screwed. I'll keep that in mind though......it's definitely creative. :D [/img]

I thought about it, but couldn't find anything good that wouldn't have seams.....the tanks pretty big. I ended up painting the glass with the same paint we were using to paint the walls. Unfortunately, I'd have to do a lot of scraping now......and actually drain the tank just to move it out...

Oscars are messy S.O.B's, I had one oscar in my 110 and he kept my Emperor 400 and the (2) Magnum 350's working pretty hard. :D If you keep up with the filters and clean them often, that will probably be enough though. If not, you can always add another filter later.

Thanks for the compliments. I love the way it turned out......it's just not as "creative" as some of the tanks I've seen. No special "theme", just lots of rock. :D No adhesive used. I just started stacking the rocks, making sure each felt sturdy where it was located before adding the next...

Well....looks like the upside down does not top out at 2.5" like that old book said, and it also shows their PH around 6-7.5........too low for me. The more I read about the petricola, the more I like it. Now I need to find a LFS that can order one, and find out how much they are. This place...

That's the one I'm interested in.......just wondering if they would work and can handle the higher PH levels the brevis need. The other cats you suggested might be too big for the 12 gallon when they grow up. Seems they can get 4-5 inches.....I wouldn't want to crowd them. The upside down...

What about a synodotis nigriventris? Looks like they stay under 2.5" and will feed off the top. The book I have says they are from "Central Africa", so I'm guessing they can handle 8.0 PH and higher (doesn't say in the book).

I'm going to go plant shopping today, and will look for the microsword. I'll try live plants ONE more time.....if they croak, plastic it is. :) I might buy some more lace rock to use as a barrier on the right hand side of the tank and I just ordered (10) more shells from exotic-cichlids.com...

I MIGHT leave the other two sea shells in only because the little guys seem to like them so much.....but I'm like you. It will eventually bug me that they don't "match". The only reason they are in there was the Neo's hadn't arrived before the fish did.....and I wanted them to have something...

I'm hesitant to try live plants again as every time I do........they die and dirty the tank. I don't have a green thumb apparently..... My fish do great, my plants die. :lol: I might stick some plastic plants in though.

More shells? 8O I have 15 in there now (there are some behind the rock that you can't see in that view). I actually separated the clusters today to stop the fighting. Once the shells were spread apart, each of the fish picked a general spot to defend and kept the battles to a minimum...

Exotic-cichlids.com e-mailed me to let me know my 8 shells definitely shipped today and should be at my house by Friday. The little guys will just have to hide in rock until they get here for a couple of days (picking the fish up Thursday).

Sweet! Any idea what size opening I should get for brevis? I've read they are very pick and get stressed if they don't have the right size around. I guess I could order 7-8 of various sizes and see what they go for.
