    Injured earth eater cichlid fin

Hey guys, haven't been on the forum in a while but I've run into a situation where I could use some advise. My earth eater cichlid injured his fin about 8 months ago. It was a small cut on his fin and healed fairly quickly in about a week. Now its been a while since that injury but area where...

    every new fish is dying

That article was really good at explaining what old tank syndrome is. Thank you. I added a blue ram chiclid last night. Same acclimation procedure that I've been doing all along, just instead of an hour and a half, I did it about two to two and a half hours. I think acclimating longer and...

    every new fish is dying

Also, forgot to add: I did 50% water changes the day before I added the fish that died. I did the water changes both times.

    every new fish is dying

I do water changes every 2-3 days. I do about 15-20 gallons every time. The tank is a 55 gallon. Ive never heard of old tank syndrome. I'll have to read up on it.

    every new fish is dying

OK so, I added 5 new tiger barbs to the tank this evening. They were small ones, and 5 for $5. It ended working out perfect since I wanted to replace the two that I lost. I acclimated them for a little over 2 hours and they have survived so far without any issues! I checked the LFS pH reading...

    every new fish is dying

Yeah its really bugging me not knowing what's wrong with adding new fish. I've added crushed coral to try to get my pH up a bit. Aiming for a stable 6.8. Gonna try a new fish store and yes the old ones water. Next time I'm getting some more tiger barbs because I only have one left and I'm...

adding new fish: alternative to using a net?

Hey everyone, I know with catfish and other fish with spikes or whiskers using s net to get them into your tank can get their fins or whiskers caught. What are some alternatives to this so that the fish is not harmed from the transfer from the bag or drip acclimating bucket into the tank? I'm...

    every new fish is dying

Yeah I'll probably buy some air tubing and start drip acclimating into a bucket. I did add the crushed coral to my filter trays and hopefully I'll be able to stabilize the pH around 6.8-7.0. Thanks again everyone.

    every new fish is dying

I have checked the fish stores water before and the parameters weren't bad, but I can't remember exacts or how far off exactly they were from mine. I will have to check next time I try for more fish. I do dechlorinate. I use tetra aqua safe plus when I do water changes. I put water in a 5...

    every new fish is dying

Hey everyone. Hadn't been on here for a while but I've got nowhere else to go. I have a fully cycled 55 gallon tank. Its been up and running with fish for over a year. I have healthy barbs, loaches, a cichlid, peacock eel, amazon dwarf frog, and snails. I perform water changes regularly and my...

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Got the 55gallon tank set up this past weekend. I've got all the plants moved over and the sand substrate from the 20gallon is on top of the new sand. I'm running both the new 55gallon filter and the old 20 gallon filter on the 55. I added a capful of ammonia last night and I'll start testing...

One more quick question: what type/brand of crushed coral do you recommend? Thanks!

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Just figured I'd pop in and give an update. My ammonia is below .25ppm now. My nitrites are still spiked, and I'm at 20ppm nitrates. The pH was almost 6.0 so I did a 50% water change. It went back up to 6.4ish. Now my question is this: my tank is freshwater, can crushed coral be added to a...

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Tested the water today. My pH is getting real low now. Its about 6.2 what does everyone recommend to raise the pH? Just pH up drops, or is there something natural to counteract the driftwood bringing the pH down? Thanks again for your help. Test results: Ph- 6.2 Ammonia- 2ppm Nitrite- 5ppm...

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Yeah I know that the bacteria aren't in the water column. I'm gonna run the 20 gallons' filter alongside the ones that I get for the 55 until the 55 is cycled just to jump start the bacteria growth in the new filters. Once the 55 is cycled, I'm gonna just use the new filters. I'm also...

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Finally started showing some nitrites last night. And my pH is still about the same. There's a good possibility that I'm getting a 55 gallon soon though. So I'll finish cycling this tank and put this water into the 55 when I get it so I at least have a jump start on getting that tank cycled...

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Thanks for that info. Just tested the pH. Its at 6.8. The driftwood has been in for about 24 hours, so hopefully that's as low as the pH will get from it.

Just giving an update on the fishless cycling. I got my driftwood in so that's in the tank now. Here are the test results for today: Ammonia: 3ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 0ppm

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Yes I'm doing a fishless cycle. Just did a few tests this morning. The ammonia was down around 1-2ppm I'm guessing because of the water change, so I added 1/4 teaspoon ammonia and I'll check the level later. I'm gonna try to get to 4ppm, then let it drop to 1, add to 4, etc. Until it drops to...

    New 20gal Fishless Cycling

Wish I would've seen your post before I did the water change. The only reason I did it was because I thought you were only supposed to be around .25-.50 while cycling. I'm gonna take your advice and just leave it now. What do you recommend my ammonia level to hover around while cycling? I guess...
