    Aiptasia!! Help

Exactly! And, if I understand correctly, aiptasia is great at consuming excess nutrients so, if it's not a plague then why not let it do what it's good at? Perhaps we need to arm our fish with Joe's juice syringes so that they can uphold the law in the "tough" neighborhoods where the aiptasia...

    Aiptasia!! Help

Wow! I had no idea that there were (at least) 2 different kinds of Aiptasia - ones that go crazy and ones that just, well, grow a bit! I could never understand why my 5 or 6 aipatsia have been only 5 or 6 for over a year, never seeming to multiply and yet appearing in different places... I...

    Best HOB Overflow?

LIFEREEF!!! I have no connection whatsoever with the company but the Lifereef HOB overflows are just perfect. I've had one on my 90 for 2+ years. Never had a problem, and I never worry about power outages. The standard of construction is also great. They aint cheap but they are good. Only...

    Tried this product??

Don't be fooled! This is exactly the same light on sale in HD. Not sure of the price - this sounds about right. HOWEVER it is NOT a 500W fluorescent light!!! It is a 65W light that gives the equivalent of 500W of incandescent light. So it's roughly the same as 65W of fluorescent - any kind of...

A good reason to Quarantine your new arrivals.

OK, point well made - about parasitic organisms at any rate. Interesting that the life cycle of the ich organism would necessitate only a 3 day quarantine at normal reef tank temperatures. I guess that means thet if you do "roll the dice" so to speak, you will know the result in just a few days...

A good reason to Quarantine your new arrivals.

I'll admit that my statement is based on very little science, how about yours? Do you have proof of this statement? (Don't want to argue for the sake of it, I'm genuinely interested in this topic). Andy.

A good reason to Quarantine your new arrivals.

But then again... to "play" the other side of the argument (which will probably be raging as long as humans keep aquaria).... I too introduced a Coral Beauty into my 90 a couple of months ago. Inhabitants before her were - Yellow Tang, mated pair of clowns, lawnmower blenny, pair (yes a "pair")...

    More than 1 starfish?

Hi all, I have in my tank a monster (as in "big", not as in "predatory") of a green brittle star. Now, I know, I know that they have a bad rap, but I've had him for almost 2 years and, althoug he's needed a lawyer once or twice (!), he's never been found guilty! My question is, though, is it OK...

    overflow box

Use a Lifereef U-tube overflow box and fit a Dursoe (the miniature one that is designed to fit in such boxes). It will NEVER fail, it will ALWAYS re-start faultlessly after a power outage. It need cleaning out about once every visit of Haley's comet (!) and is as quiet as the grave! Costs a...

    Maxijet Natural Wavemaker System

This setup (natural wave timer + Maxijet 1200's) works even better if you do the "mod" to the Maxijets and cut off the output tube. This produces a wide range of patterns in water flow since these PH's start up in random directions each time.

    How to control Anthelia?

Hmmm.... LFS in Tyler, Texas!! Might as well look for a good fishmonger! But seriously, how do I get these critters off the rock? Touch them harshly and they shrink to nothing, like trying to grab a forkful of sand! And yet they are tough to remove from the rock - tried tugging...

    How to control Anthelia?

Hehe, No offence Lando - 2 years inthis hobby by no means makes me an expert but it does make me able to distinguish between anthelia and aiptasia. :D As you can see from the attached pic , it doesn't make me into a photographer! Oddly enough - funny you should mention aiptasis. I DO have a...

    How to control Anthelia?

Some time ago I bought a rock with yellow polyps. After a couple months some tan colored anthelia (sp?) emerged from this rock. They've subsequently reproduced all over the tank and are now the dominant species. Any ideas on how to control these? They don't seem to be aggresive to any of the...

Who's got the oldest Cleaner Shrimp?

Going on two years for my two! On the subject of feeding inverts. with these ravenous beasts present: Every week I feed my open brain on mysis shrimp or some such critters. I puzzled for ages on how to do this without the food floating off or being nabbed by the shrimp. In the end I got a...

    Salinity

Ummm... sorry to ask this question after so many (good) replies, but... if your salinity is 1.026, why do you want to get it down??? For a reef 1.025 is ideal, 1.026 is certainly "close enough". Mine seems pretty healthy ranging from 1.024 - 1.026 over the 2-week 10% water change cycle....

    Power outtage scare

Erm... Am I missing something here? In the "nowheresville", TX location that my tanks at, the power goes out, dips etc. all the time. Never has this caused me a problem. A combination of a Lifereef (= completely idiot-proof) overflow and enough space in the sump to accomodate backflow until the...

    dr. foster and smith?

Never had a problem with Dr. Foster Smith. The best place for my money is the Marine Center in DFW. Customer service is just excellent, packaging is the best in the industry. True, I benefit from the reduced rate shipping (200 mile radius of Dallas) but, even without that, they are the best...

    Yellow Polyps

Funny that.... I had a rock with yellow polyps on. I fed home-brew Phyto and bought Zooplankton. The rock also had some hitchhiker anthea (sp?) that went crazy, as have all the other corals in my tank. The yellows though simply slowly disappeared, nothing I did seemed to make any diference. The...

    nitrate problem

Not sure everyone will agree with this statement (I personally feed twice a day - always have, never had a nitrate issue). And, of course we'd need to know what type of and how many fish and also how much is being fed twice a day. A lot of fish prefer "small and often" versus "large and...

    2 Royal Grammas?

Following what many people think is "iffy" advice I bought 2 Royal Grammas from The Marine Center for my 90 reef. (Other fishy inhabitants = 1 yellow tang, mated pair of perculas, 4 reef chromis, lawnmower blenny). Some people said they would fight to the death, others that they would simply...

    nitrate problem

We are going to need a huge amount more detail than that to give any meaningful answer!! Tank size? Skimmer? RO/DI water for topoff? Inhabitants? How old is the tank? EXACT water tests (not just "at the min" or "good")? Qty. of Live Rock? Other filtration? Any chemicals added? Recent changes...
