    Diatomes in a New Tank

So I've started noticing a light brown "dust" coating the older leaves of my plants (it seems to grow up the stalk). I haven't taken them out to wipe them off or cut the leaves because I've heard that this can resolve itself or be taken care of with minimal changes to the aquarium. My tank is...

Betta Death: Circumstances Sad, Ironic and Blackly Humorous

Lol That is ironic. Those poor sharks. XD At least you figured out what was going on so you don't repeat the same mistake. Still... you killed a SHARK with SALT. If I were one of those sharks in fish heaven I would be embarrassed. "So how did you die?" "Weellll... I was doing my thing...

Betta Death: Circumstances Sad, Ironic and Blackly Humorous

Thanks everyone for your love and attention; I like the suggestion about writing a blog, but I'm not quite that full of myself. Yet. Maybe a few more comments will pump up my ego! *Hint Hint Nudge Nudge* Yeah: I will not name future betta for violent people or people who've commited suicide...

Unfamiliar with Cory Catfish; Stocking and Other Questions

Thanks for the advice about breaking up the wafer: I also started adding fewer (1/2 wafer in the morning before the light's on, 1/2 at night after light's off). The change was astonishing: they went from picking at their food to an itty-bitty feeding frenzy. I was definitely feeding them too...

How often should I do a water change?

Most sites will say let it sit for 24 hours before you add it to your tank. I let it sit for a few days because I want ready water on hand in the event my tank starts a mini cycle, it springs a leak or I need to remove a fish and I don't want to put it into the tiny excuse I have for a...

How often should I do a water change?

I just let it sit there a few days. Most water districts add chlorine to the water to kill bacteria. Well, in your aquarium you WANT bacteria: the good kind, anyway. That's why you use a water conditioner and let it sit. The chlorine is taken care of by the conditioner and will also evaporate...

How often should I do a water change?

Still 25%/week. Just get into the habit of seeing those numbers a LOT. Unless you want a low-maintenance tank, and then a lot of people on here are going to be trying to convince you to put in the time and effort. Which is true: you want your fish to be as happy and healthy as possible, right...

Unfamiliar with Cory Catfish; Stocking and Other Questions

Yay: that's the sort of answer I needed. I love those Endler's with the red and orange and yellow and blue and black... yeah: can you tell I know my fish? >_<

    New tank/HELP

They're not huge on cleaning algae from your glass or decorations (unless you're starving them). They're debris eaters that will eat flakes of food that sink to the bottom from the fish above. But they won't solely survive on that: you'll want to drop a bottom-feeder wafer (Hikari is best) in...

    New tank/HELP

Yeah; you can find good community fish easily, and people are going to be jumping onto this thread to give their 2¢. Personally, I have 3 little Cory Catfish in a 10-gallon and I wish I had the space to get a shoal of 6. These guys have the cutest little personalities: they follow each other...

    New tank/HELP

Since you're new (like me) look for beginner's fish, those are guppies, Endler's live bearers, bettas (maybe not in a 20...), cory catfish, gourami... there are tons of options! What colors are you looking for: bright and flashy or more neutral tones?

    Feeding fish

Seconded! The first thing that came to mind was, "Holy!" at the thought of 2 koi in a 10 gallon with 2 bettas. Those are expensive fish; either dig them a pond or take them back to the store, because they will die for sure if you keep them in that tank.

How often should I do a water change?

About 99.9% of the population of this site will say to do 25%-50% water changes every week. Otherwise your ammonia and nitrites (fish waste and other goodies) build up to dangerous levels that can actually injure and eventually kill your fish, in addition to making fish more susceptible to disease.

Why does my angelfish stripes disappear most of the day?

Nailed it. Though I didn't know angels were cichlids or that cichlids did that. Score 1 for... smart people? @_@

    Dwarf gourami and stocking questions

Lol If you're asking me, don't. I just got into community tanks, and I started on the waaaaay small end of the scale. Mmm... brownies... I was saying?

Unfamiliar with Cory Catfish; Stocking and Other Questions

Okay. Final consensus: - 3 Trili Cory (currently in tank) - 3 Guppies (2:1 female:male) Foot's down, no more debating this on my end. However, that opens up more questions like: 1. If I just got 2 males instead, would they be aggressive towards each other or overly stressed out? If they would...

Why does my angelfish stripes disappear most of the day?

Jinkies, a mystery! How bright are your lights? How great is the color change from stripes to no stripes (are they gone completely, and when they return are they light gray or black)? I know hardly anything about aquarium fish (new) but I want in on this puzzle. :D Some animals change color...

    Dwarf gourami and stocking questions

Aha! Thank you: I'm kind of dense. I was sort of thinking you'd flushed them or something. @_@ "I gotta' make room: don't look at me like that little Cory!"

Unfamiliar with Cory Catfish; Stocking and Other Questions

You're right; I've been trying to keep in mind how big they're going to get, but I was considering it in terms of the whole tank. But if they're only using the bottom than that's a whole different story. Hrm... Okay, so maybe I will get a Gourami. What kind of current can they withstand? I'm...

Unfamiliar with Cory Catfish; Stocking and Other Questions

I don't know if I really like gourami, but tetras are cute. :) Someone else I spoke to says that I could do 6 Corys (and nothing else) in a tank no problem, but I suppose I should err on the side of caution, right? My 3 seem to be doing fine, but it's been less than a week and I don't like...

New Aquarium Enthusiast; Questions Regarding Trili Cory

Thanks a lot! :D Yeah: it's a pain doing the daily water changes to make up for putting them in too early, but you reap what you sow. Let me get the manual for the filter (I keep all documentation)... ah! I have the Model 20 AquaClear Power Filter (instead of cartidges it has 3 separate filterr...

    Huma's 72g build

Rock on! I notice on Craigslist lots of people trying to get rid of fish tanks: I thought I couldn't afford a big one, but maybe I could get one that's been gently used by someone who went, "Keeping fish sucks!" Their loss, my gain.
