Could be many factors, but you mentioned also having another male guppy in the tank. Usually you will want to have a least a couple females to one male, to help distribute the sexual harassment your male guppy gives to the females.

Not good for saltwater, nonetheless this still be a great aquarium. Get some cichlids and rock scape, this would be the center piece and attention grabber of any party. :)
