I've got a 30 gallon and can say everything is awesome without a sump. Got a bh1000 octopus protein skimmer, hob filter running Purigen, 2 power heads, 30 lbs live rock and just took it slow with adding stuff to the tank. Tank looks great.

Yeah and to answer your question- it's diatoms, algae, and probably cyano. All a result of too much bioload and waste, excess nutrients in the tank. Cut back on number of fish in the tank, add protein skimmer, add Purigen. Get the nitrates and phosphates in check, Cyphon it out and you should...

I've got that reef octopus bh1000 on my 30 gallon, it's awesome. Would highly recommend it.

Kenya trees, leathers, pulsing Xenia. All real hardy and easy to care for. Zoas and Duncans as well, maybe a bit tougher to keep, but still pretty hardy. Don't know too much about those fish and if they'd eat those though. As far as lights, t5s, halides, or leds. Your pick.

Depends on the coral but most grow on light. They also need calcium and other trace elements to grow. Some grow on light and eat food like mysis shrimp etc.

What are they???

Any idea what this thing behind my star polyp is? Has a long cord and a fan looking thing coming off of if.

It got high because my cover broke when I was cleaning and evap increased but I still topped off the same amount. I also got a new protein skimmer which I think may be causing a bit more evap. I topped off slowly with rodi and we are close to normal levels again.

My salinity has jumped to almost 1.028- what is the most I should lower salinity at a time? Ie can I add another rodi water right now to drop it into a normal level or should I do it by dropping .001 at a time???

It did- my lfs said it'd just collect algae and wasn't very useful, I'm thinking of putting at least one back on because of the bubbles though

Any other ideas?

I test for everything except magnesium.

Why would my reef tank have cloudy water today? Yesterday the water was perfect.

Still having minor bubble problems though.

I still have my hob filter, running Purigen through it. It's clear as day in my tank. I like the extra flow it adds. I don't think ill remove it, although tank would probably be fine without it. The Protein skimmer is absolutely awesome.

You guys seam to be up on the octopus bh1000. What are your thoughts on me putting my tanks heat stick in the chamber on the side of the skimmer rather than in my display tank??

I started off doing them that much, now I'm every 14 days or so. Depends on your set up- skimmer, refugium, etc. I'm just hob filter and skimmer on my 30g with 2 clowns, goby, and mandarin. No real algae build up. It's all personal preference on how clean you want your tank and how good you...
