    In my opinion, yes you have to wash itand then soak it for a week and test the parameters of the water every day and see what happens. Honestly, there fish in lake Michigan with exposure to that sand so why cant you use it?

    First off, it depends on the type of species. I have had more luck with flakes for smaller species, but if you have large fish the pellets are better and more economical.

    First i personally have owned that filter and had the same problem, you don't have to get a whole new unit. You may be able to buy a new Biowheel at your local pet store. Although, a new unit has its benefits, you can get a new Biowheel for a tenth of the cost of a new unit.
