    Hi fledgelingfish, I'm new to fishkeeping, so keep that in mind. It sounds like you did not cycle your tank. Filters do not remove ammonia. They filter & agitate. Good bacteria removes ammonia, converts it to nitrites, another bacteria convert nitrites to nitrates. Nitrates are kept in check...
