    Fishless cycle

Pee in it a little.. The pwcs before fish go in make it harmless and it works just fine.

    German Blue Ram Questions

They need more room, for what? It's a long tank. They zip around in there alright. They may need larger tanks due to how sensitive to poor water conditions and I am aware of that. And I have a free supply of ultrasonic filtered, purified water, that's what the bottles are for. I keep two 4...

    German Blue Ram Questions

Currently have 2 rams in a 5 gal. An electric blue, a yellow balloon And a couple of snails. Should be ok in 10. Just keep the water good and watch their behaviour. If they start to go pale and lose the red from their eyes then they are suffering a little and you should do a 10-20% wc. Have a...

    HELP. Didn't cycle tank.

It wont be a big enough amount of water to cause any problems, I wouldn't worry.

How much longer will these nitrites....

2 months to get nitrites? You might want to get something to treat your water to get rid of the chlorine. Every water change. Then you'll have plenty of bacteria.. I don't know any brands of things. I get filtered water that says it should be used in 3 days, that's how I know it's not full of...

    Cleaning a Tank

Yes, that's easier. Maybe keep the drift wood to attach some Plants to? Choose a new substrate more suited for planted tank.

    Please help filtration question

The filter you have chosen already offers ample filtration.. Really confusing post. You have an interesting opportunity though. I'm not sure what I would want to do with that space, just having water run through it is enough.. If you wanted some extra filtration you could stuff some filter...

Do I Need An Air Pump?

I think air bubbles can help add to the water movement in parts of the tank that there may not be a good flow from the filter, like around decorations or in caves. Mixing up anything that could settle there to rot is a good idea and air stones are a great way to do that.

    How do you know?

I think this is a great community. It may be something about the hobby itself that attracts people with a certain personality but its great how we all want to know more and if opinions differ we can agree to disagree. Just awesome. It's something so scientific but with so many variables that...

    How do you know?

Nitrates get taken up by plants. That's the plan anyway. I'm gonna head to bed. It's been good chatting, there is an actual chat room on here ey? I might check it out next time in on.

    How do you know?

Readings like .5 ppm of ammonia aren't likely to linger in a tank with an established nitrogen cycle regardless of it being 20,10 or even 5 gallons right? Especially with 1 or 2 fish in it. So saying such a large tank is necessary isn't as helpful as saying you should have a tank that can...

    How do you know?

Ok then, Well, I think if we need to convince someone their tank isn't big enough. We probably should explain why, First of all by explaining whether its because the fish in question need more room to explore or because the fish have a large bioload. See, to a beginner its a little bit like...

    How do you know?

Could start here. If a fish dies from bad conditions,do we have a thread for people to post what the conditions were, and I'm pretty sure there is heaps of scientific data like I was reading before here...

    How do you know?

Hehe, they are funny how it dangles behind them. Ok, imagine a rating system that incorporated how active, how much they eat ,how heavy their waste was (and therefore how slow it would degrade) and all those things according to their adult size. Mixed it with what level of different toxins they...

    How do you know?

But for example you started this post with a statement about rams being sensitive to nitrate. So you know this for a fact? I don't mean "have you kept them?" I mean is that an actual fact that they are indeed more sensitive to nitrates? And how sensitive are we talking? If I understood...

    How do you know?

Is bioload the reason rams have been said to need a bigger tank?

    How do you know?

Yeh, I'm very appreciative of the advice of this community and I do respect it, I just wanted to have a bit of a grumble. I'm preparing a tank for a couple of cobalt balloon rams. It's a 5 gallon tank and I know it's gonna be challenge but I'm confident I can pull it off. The thing about it is...

    How do you know?

Just a quick question. I see people jumping down new hobbyist's throats about their tank size and plucking numbers out of thin air for what they heard or read in the same regurgitated spiel in another post where they were jumping down the throat of another new hobbyist. And I've got a simple...

Just another Fish in cycling question

Hmm Nitrates are the final product of nitrites.. So you had nitrites. Your water changes are effectively population control on the bacteria that turn ammonia into nitrites ..leave the lid off and leave the water change for a day or so. Try to maintain 1ppm for ammonia and change only 10% for...

    Tank not cycling?

Wow, This made me do a little bit of research. I think I have got a really good image of things now. Water with ammonia added to it for all intensive purposes here should be thought of as H20 + NH3 Initially, but changes happen depending on the temps and pH level (some of those H's jump from...

    Tank not cycling?

Well no ammonia or NO2-,3- is not a cycled tank. If you had a cycle started there would be at least some readings , something killed your bacteria? Do you have a chlorine tester? How big is the tank? What temps are you running? Salt? Pee in it?

    anyone know this fish?

I googled the longhorn cowfish's scientific name (Lactoria cornuta), then just entered the first part(genus) and then went through them until I think I found a winner:dance: could it be a thornback cowfish (Lactoria fornasini)? you can see the little thorn poking up.

    Tank not cycling?

I actually found this web site and posted on a forum concerning ammonia. Let me think ,, oh yes. Pee in your tank. Seriously, if you don't have/can't get uncontaminated ammonia freely where you are or something. take a cup and pee a little bit in it and add it to your tank. I've just...

    help with nitrate

Get an aquatic plant in there, they use nitrates. or even a normal plant like lucky bamboo with the top poking out the top. the roots will take in nutrients and nitrates no problem.
