I was under the impression that the 15x to 20x turnover was regarding total current in the main tank and not necessarily the flow thru your sump.

I have been reading alot about this new hobby of mine and it seems as though I should be setting up a quarentine tank as well as my main tank. So my question is what has everyone else done? Do you have it set up all the time with no fish? If it is set up all the time do you have stuff in it...

Nitrate could be converted to nitrogen gas by other bacteria in the lr and ls, but I would still expect to see at least a little NO3, I also thought it took a while for the nitrate eating bacteria to set up shop.

I'm cycling with lr also, and its amazing how fast it seems to be going. I think, for some peolple at least, that it is sticker shock that stops the initial purchase of lr. But then after doing more searching and reading they realize how important it is and so add it later.

My ammonia droped from 8 to 0 over night so i guess anything is possible. And maybe the trates are down due to bacteria forming inside the lr and breaking them down?

I would say yes, you need the power heads to circculate the water to keep O2 lvls up. You probably don't need as much as the coral keepers but you deffinately need the water to be moving otherwise it will get stagnant.

My nitrites have been spiked since saturday as well, but im reading little to no nitrates. The only test reading that made a dramatic change was the ammonia. It just struck me as odd. I was expecting a gradual decrease in ammonia as the bacteria formed. On a side note, this hurry up and wait...

I am cycling my 55gal tank w/ 60lbs live rock, and 60lbs of sand. I have been doing daily tests and my ammonia lvl has been spiked at 8+ since saturday, but today when i did the test twice it came up at .5 Is it normal to have such a dramatic drop off of ammonia or should i test again tomorrow?

I just used live rock, there was plenty of ammonia from the die off.

I was wondering if anyone had some sugestions on how to set up live rock in my tank? Right now i just kinda have it all sitting in the tank. should i take it all out and arrange it and then place it back in? and how do you make the pieces stable so they don't tip or wobble? Thanks in advance
