    Nitrate Test

Will ferts throw off the API nitrate test? I just did a massive water change and my nitrates tested rather high, but I dosed with ferts prior to testing. Did I skew the test by dosing with ferts?

Please help me ID this Mbuna Cichlid

The black trim leads me to say Socolifi. Possibly a hybrid. Didn't see the trim in the pictures.

    EBJD and Angelfish?

I suppose so. Would cory cats shouldn't be a problem though.

    EBJD and Angelfish?

Rams are bottom dwelling fish, I figured their territories wouldn't overlap at all. but I'll limit the amount of angelfish I keep to 8.

    EBJD and Angelfish?

About how many Angelfish is the max for a 125? I planned on having around 8-10 with about 6 rams, 6-10 cory cats, and MAYBE some tetras. I'll have 2 Eheim 2217s and a sump for filtration, and I'll be doing weekly water changes.

    EBJD and Angelfish?

That sounds doable. Maybe some tetras as well?

    EBJD and Angelfish?

I think I'm just going to go with Discus now, maybe add a couple of these other fish, the rams, festivum, and keyholes. I might even add a couple kribs. That sounds safer. Is there a significant difference in the different color discus? I've read that they need a school to thrive, but does it...

I knew they were fragile, but wow!

    EBJD and Angelfish?

I've been reading up on these Electric Blue Jack Dempseys and I'm reading that they tend to be less aggressive, grow slower, and stay smaller than their normal counterparts. Would they make suitable tankmates for angelfish? I finally have a 125 gallon for my S.A. build, and instead of discus, I...

    Crushed Coral with S.A. Cichlids?

Thanks! I'll just run with the normal gravel substrate that's already in there.

    Crushed Coral with S.A. Cichlids?

I am in the middle of a tank migration with my Africans going into a 125 Gal, and my S.A. Fish going into the 45 Gal that the Africans are vacating. I have a bunch of leftover substrate from the African build that is mostly Black Blasting Sand, with a little crushed coral mixed in. I have a...

    Substrate for Africans

Thank you! I'll be using sand, but I'll mix in some crushed coral with it too.

    Substrate for Africans

So don't use the coral at all as part of the substrate? I guess a handful in a filter would be good for a 125-150 gallon tank? I have to ask, at what point does someone actually use these carbonate based substrates, as an actual substrate? And of course, thank you for the guidance thus far...

    Substrate for Africans

Should the crushed coral be used with other, inert sands, or just by itself? Yeah, I'd like to keep my pH around where it is without using cichlid buffer.

    Substrate for Africans

My pH out of the tap is 7.4-7.5. I was interested in the buffering the substrates supposedly offer. Right now my fish are in water that has a pH of 8.0-8.2. Would a carbonate based substrate take my pH beyond what it is now?

    Substrate for Africans

I'm about to upgrade out of my 45 gallon to a 150 gallon and I have some questions about the pH buffering of the different substrates. I've heard that puka shells, aragonite, and crushed coral all raise the pH, harden the water, and buffer against pH changes. Is one better than the others in...

    Sump & Canister Combo?

Thank you so much for the information! I'm still researching sumps and I had another question. Is it better to use the bio-balls, or another media such as Seachem Matrix? What sump setup would you recommend for a 125 gallon tank with Lake Malawi cichlids?

    Sump & Canister Combo?

Thank you both! I was asking as I was aware of the benefits as sump has as for as added capacity, and space for bio-media, as well as other tank accessories. I also know that canister filters are pretty good as well, although not as good as a sump, but they are more forgiving. I was curious...

    Algone?

Does anyone have any information on a product called "algone water clarifier and nitrate remover"? I have a buddy who is using it, and I'd like to know what you guys think of it. Is it a Purigen knock-off, or is it something else?

I'm normally at Kandahar so it would have to be Pashtun! My job out there is to support the warfighter. My days in uniform are over, but thank you very much.
