Ich outbreak - Possible alternatives? Ca issues as well.

I can tell you from experience that the snake oil cures for ich are just that - snake oil. The only thing that will get rid of ich for sure is a fishless tank for 6-8 weeks.

Had a little reproductive event in my tank last night..

it was cool... all of his "tentacles" were extended like crazy, they would wave in toward his anus and out as he expelled the eggs. We could sub in Lou Rawls for the music, turn on the disco ball, etc..

Had a little reproductive event in my tank last night..

(cue Barry White music..) My tuxedo urchin is one of my favorite critters.. it has thrived in my tank and g grown a lot. last night during a water change with water that was a little colder than it should have been my urchin raced up the overflow housing to the waterline and spewed out...

    easy hardy corals

At two weeks in you aren't even cycled yet... I hope you don't have fish in there. Wait until your cycle is done before you add anything.. at least 6 weeks unless you have tons of lR.

    Typhoon Protein Skimmer?

You generally get what you pay for in skimmers.. look at AquaC brand, either the remora/remora pro or the smaller end of the EV line. I use a AquaC EV-120 and love it.

    Lighting Questions! Need Help QUICK!!!

6500k is a good color temp for a refugium where you are growing macroalgae.. you need 10000k (or higher) and actinic for a reef tank.

For trade.. large box of live rock, still wet!

A friend of mine tore down his reef tank.. baby on the way. I loaded up my system and 20L sump with rock and I still have a large box FULL of large, interesting pieces of rock.. I'm going to guess at 20-30 pounds of rock, maybe more. There are some really big pieces here.. I have them in water...

    Disaster!!! Water everywhere...

This is the second time I've seen a nanocube-type aquarium crack like that.. we had one break over a weekend in my office once. Needless to say a break over the weekend with nobody in the office led tlad to total disaster.. glad to see you were able to salvage things!

    Reef tank lighting question

I'd be interested to know what you have been reading. Take a look at what successful reefkeepers have been doing.. You usually see PC, T5 and MH.. most PC and T5 daylight bulbs are 10000K, MH around 12000K. 6700K is waht I use on my refugium for growing macroalgae - a very "yellow" light. I'm...

Diary of my first saltwater tank...Awesome.

Just don't rush things... let your tank cycle for 6-8 weeks. You will be getting close when you get your first algae bloom - greenish-brown stuff that begins to grow on your sand. Rushing anything in this hobby just leads to frustration.

    Reef tank lighting question

5000k sounds like the wrong light spectrum for a reef tank.. I run 10000k and actinic pc lights.

Controlling high Nitrates - HELP Please!

Dump the seaclone for a better skimmer.. I have a AquaC ev120 that really got my nitrates under control.. the HOB refugium w/caulerpa also helped in that regard. You have enough LR that you probably don't need any mechanical filtration save for the skimmer and a good clean-up crew. A sump with...

how much T5 lighting is enough?

I have a 55g reef.. I was faced with the need to completely re-lamp my coralife 4x65w PC fixture because it was time to do so and I opted to buy 2 coralife T5 fixtures instead.. one is a 36" 42 watt and the other is a 30" 36 watt. They each have one 10k and one Actinic bulb. My xenia, zoos and...

    Coral life Super Skimmer

I've never had trouble with my overflow box.. if the tank side of the box isn't set too low and the spray bar coming from the pump has a couple of holes drilled in it (they usually come with one drilled at least) below the water line you will be fine.. the only place I see people having trouble...

    Mantis is found

Maybe your lfs will buy it from you.. some folks do like to keep these. Make no mistake, his "super kung-fu grip" claw can do some real damage to you as well as the tank glass. Be careful..

    Gluing an anenome ???

Restraining the anemone would likely be a bad idea.. anemones move when some environmental parameter isn't to their liking: Flow rate, lighting, inability to find food for starters. keeping them from finding a spot in the tank where they are comfortable will likely lead to stress and eventual...

    Surge Protector

60hz 110v power is 60hz 110v power.. the "sine wave" is the picture of that. any consumer-grade ups is just fine. Sounds like someone was trying to milk more money out of you for a ups.

Crab genocide or just a molt?

I've got three emerald crabs in my 55.. they have never paid much attention to each other. Yesterday evening I saw one of the emeralds picking at the broken-open shell of another emerald.. it was literally like he had the hood open on a car, he was picking inside the shell on the "victim"...

Is there an effective wayto treat ich without QT?

You get what you pay for... doesn't sound like much of a light in there, flow would have to be really slow. Shortcutting the process of using hyposalinity in a seperate tank and letting your main go fallow will probably result in the death of your fish.. I've lost my share of money and fish by...

    Anemone ? or corallimorph

They look like atlantic carpet anemones and they look stressed at that.. not normal for their mouth to be distended like that unless they are in the middle of eating something. Be sure to put good cover over your powerhead intakes.. these guys (if they are what I think they are) will move...

Is there an effective wayto treat ich without QT?

With all due respect I must disagree. Ich is a parasite, not a bacteria to be immune to. A healthy fish that is eating well can resist the ich attaching to them with a better slime coat than stressed/sick fish can whose resistance is lower. A stressed/sick fish is just more susceptible...
