Careys Tank(s) Lots of Pictures, Questions & Thoughts

Carey liveaquaria.com has the white tail bristletooth tangs in stock again I just ordered on from them. I remember me and you having a conversation about them forever ago. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3130&ref=4620&subref=AA&cmpid=E-_-TR-_-Stock-_-P1 Sent from my...

    Biocube 14

I want to take the lid off and run a PAR38 or equivalent bulb over the tank. It just has softies but I want to put LPS and other corals in as well. Anyone know what bulb and mount they would use? I would like to be able to dim it as well. I have an orphek Atlantik on my 55 but I haven't ever...

    Lighing question.....

Sorry just noticed it was saying in conjunction with the LEDs you have. I would get at least a 4foot fixture so you have the proper coverage. Plus reflectors play a big role in T5 lighting since it's not at all directional without them. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Lighing question.....

That link is to a 2ft single bulb 24 watt fixture I don't even think two of those would be enough for LPS Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Lighing question.....

No where near enough. Grab two ebay led fixtures. I'll attach a link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/130945201662?redirect=mobile This fixture will grow anything you'd like. Even one will get you by but you'll need two. The marineland fixture is powered with 1watt LEDs instead of 3 watt so they don't...

    Cracked tank!!! 180gal

No there is roughly 2000 pounds of water sitting on top of that glass. Repair it. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Grrr, Persistant Green Hair Algae

Old bulbs? Plus the tank will read no phosphates or nitrates because the hair algae will be consuming them so you may still have a source of phosphates or nitrates. Plus the dying corals flesh could be causing a nitrate problem that the algae is absorbing. My last gha outbreak I took the rocks...

    Cracked tank!!! 180gal

I would replace it. $280 isn't too bad for the glass with holes drilled. My 210 was almost $1800 for the glass so you're still lower than the cost to replace it. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Lighting for reef tank

No I ran two of them on my 55. You get the dimmables so that your lights will handle whatever you get into. I ran 4 on my 210 before I took it down. One way per gallon is awful low for a reef tank. LPS and SPS will demand much more light than that.

    Need a return pump recommendation

No problem. Good choice in pumps. Scicce is my favorite just not when when I press the checkout and pay button lol

    Need a return pump recommendation

You'd likely need at least the 5.0 I'm running a 3.0 on my 55 reef

    Lighting for reef tank

The main specs you're looking for is they should use quality LEDs like Cree or bridgelux. Quality drivers. And I like 3 watt LEDs. A ton of 1 watt leds won't penetrate like the 3 watt LEDs will. Also lens angle if they have them.

    Drilling 20G

Even my 10 gallon says it's tempered on the bottom. Sides are 99% of the time standard glass especially on small tanks.

    Drilling 20G

Most glass tanks are tempered on the bottom and shouldn't be drill. It will likely shatter. You can drill the back glass with no issues thought. Glass-holes.com sells complete overflow kits with the hole saw, box and everything. Just match the pump to the overflow.

    Glass Vs Acrylic?

Yeah my tank is 3/4" acrylic and the 210 I have is 1/2" so that does make sense I never really even put two and two together lol

    Glass Vs Acrylic?

That's odd....maybe mine was just thicker than it needed to be haha. My 180 acrylic weighs significantly more than my 210 glass. Ateast 100lbs heavier but It may just be the way the foot print of the tank is.

    Need a return pump recommendation

A mag 12 should be plenty if you're running the pump from under the stand. You won't have that much head loss. If you're worried grab a mag18 and throttle it back some with a ball valve or gate valve

    Lighting for reef tank

Yes just remember they produce heat and you will have to change the bulbs at least every year. LEDs will last 50,000 hours before burning out. There are people who swear by each and hate the other I can tell you I've had t5s, power compacts and metal halide but just still love my LEDs. I just...

    Glass Vs Acrylic?

Acrylic tends to retain heat as well so since most reef tanks tend to run hot due to lights and tons of equipment...... You may want to factor in the cost of a chiller. Pros though acrylic is easily buffed if it's scratched on the outside, it's clearer, it's stronger, it's cheaper, heat...

    Need a return pump recommendation

I run a mag24 on my 210 and haven't had heat or noise issues from it. Before I was running scicce pumps but when it burned out I didn't have the money to replace it and bought this. It's been kicking for 2 1/2 years so far without a failure.

    Lighting for reef tank

LEDs off eBay are good for starting out. Less power and no bulb changes every 9 months. Just search 120watt dim able led aquarium fixture. There is a seller supermart168 that sells them for around $120 each. You'll need two. These are the "taotronics" everyone talks about.

    Water nutirent high low

What are your test readings and more than just nutrients/elements go into a reef. It's lighting, flow, day temperature and night temperature swing, Ph and Ph swing, lighting schedule, salt mix, water change techniques, age of tank, etc Eric. We will need way more info to diagnose your problem...
