40-gallon - mix of real and fake. Plants on the right are real, on the left, fake. Just bought some seachem packs today that are supposed to help with the major nutrient deficiency, particularly in the large Amazon sword. Mostly rummy-nose tetras swimming about.

This is great advice, folks, I appreciate it. So far I'm getting the impression that prime is not only effective but more cost effective. I certainly didn't know about the dry "Safe" seachem product - I think I'll check that out given that, yes, my budget for aquarium stuff is quite low!

Success!! After a thorough cleaning, it looks like indeed it was simply clogged up with gunk and the impeller was unable to move. It flows better than before too. Link119 and BBradbury - thanks for saving me the unnecessary expense of a new HOB filter.
