Getting the tank back to normal today...doing the water change and putting the filters back in. Will keep ya'll posted on how things go. In a couple weeks going to start up a second aquarium...got my 72gallon bowfront....will do this one the right way...
Thank you for this information...guess I need to do some research. I do know that since using the fungus cure the fish are more active and eating well. Maybe I wasn't dealing with ich....i will check around and see if there is someone that can come look at my fish....
thanks again
Gary
Newl essons learned the hard way
Well it seems that I developed ICK/FinRot on a few fish and found it too late...wound up losing a few. At PETSMART recommendation have treated the tank with API Fungus Cure and the remaining fish appear to be doing better and responding well. Their activity...
pink kissing gouramis acting strange
the past few days my pink kissing gouramis have started just staying at the bottom of the tank...one of them actually almost lays over on its side. When i feed the fish they pop up and eat...but settle back down to the bottom...last night i thought one was...
Thanks Mebbid...now i just have to convince "the boss" to go along with this new venture. I will start doing my research. Any suggestions on a good source for fish? I have a lead on one place here in the Springs that is supposed to be a "Cichlid haven" ... will see what i find.
Cichlids in next tank?
wow....i feel like i graduated....contemplating a second aquarium dedicated to cichlids...what do i need to research on those? I will definitly do that one right from the start...
Chemistry as of now...
Nitrites 0ppm
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrates 40ppm
This is saying that my Nitrates have doubled since 10/9 ... is this a normal rate of increase? What contributes to this increase?
Per what OS suggested earlier in this thread I will do a 50% water change now that Nitrates...
chemistry of the day
Nitrites 0ppm
Ammo <.25ppm closer to 0
Nitrates 20ppm
It was a sad day....one of my Gold Gouramis that has been with me the longest was dead when i got back from shopping this morning. He(it) seemed fine when I left...i had a moment of silence before i gave it the proper...
I think we can call it cycling!
Hey OS...ammonia is 0ppm....Nitrites are .5ppm(first time i have seen nitries...Nitrates approaching 40ppm so doing a 50% change as you recommended. Fish have been doing great. Loving this python water changer...especially with my new kitchen faucet that allows...
Thanks...put a lot of thought into it when i was setting it up. Folks at Petsmart pulled a 60 gallon off the shelf and let me pull things off shelf to give it a dry run in the store....hats off to them.
Will be checking chemicals later this afternoon....been busy with some happy homeowner...
Thanks OS....The Marineland Penguin 350 should be sufficient for my tank size from everything I read before purchasing it. Learned my lesson about overstocking...definitly not going to let that happen.
I can't thank all of you enough for all the advice and guidance that you have provided...
Oct 1st...the ongoing adventure
Today readings are Nitrite 0ppm, Nitrates a strong 20ppm....Ammonia less than .25ppm.
When should i resume weekly maintenance?
latest readings.
readings today...Nitrite 0ppm, Nitrates above 10ppm, Ammonia .25ppm(on the light side)
doing a 15% change this weekend and topping tank off.
Does it need to be treated weekly with Seachem Prime?
Progress....
Ammonia went down to .25ppm ... Nitrites are 0ppm....Nitrates somewhere between 10-20ppm...hard for me to distinguish between those two colors on the API color chart.
Soooooooooooo....that looks like progress to me. Brings me to my next question....water changes...how much...
latest tests
OS...just tested my chemicals and good news...ammonia has not gone up since yesterday and the color of the Nitrate test is darker...but not quite at 10ppm yet. Nitrites are still 0ppm. I moved the grungy filter to the right side of the Penguin 350 to get some gunk going into that...
Thanks OS I will test again this afternoon here and see what happens. By the way I ordered the 20 inch tube for the place on water changer sure is awesome. So glad you made that recommendation it is made my life so much easier. Also by the way I downloaded the app for my phone great way to keep...
i am seeing changes - yay
ok...I did squeeze out the filter pad from the baggie yesterday and just added that into my filter.
Just did my api test
0ppm Nitrite
5-10ppm Nitrate
.5ppm Ammonia
First time I have gotten a Nitrate reading...thats a good thing right? So should i just wait...
the saga continues....
Well my buddy brought over two grungy filter pads that fit in my Penquin 350.....however when i put both of them in along with my current pads my biowheels quit turning....so i have one of his in there with mine...the other one I squeezed as much of the stuff as i could...
Temperature and light cycle
Guess I forgot to ask a basic question...what temperature should the aquarium be maintained at? Currently mine is set to 78degrees and maintains there pretty well. I was reading an article on here that mentioned increasing it to 88 to get it to cycle....I am...
Thanks Fishfur....I have noticed that my ammonia is not increasing near as fast as it had been...still not measuring any nitrites/nitrates tho. getting the other filter media and filter water tonight....will be nice once this cycles. But like what OS said....with the Python having to do a 50%...
