    GCCA Swap

I'll be at the February swap but not the rare fish auction.

    Siphon of some sort?

It's normal. You might not have seen it before because they are more active at night.

Buying New Guppies & Mollies - All Male or All Female?

Is it a planted tank? If you have lots of hiding places then the fry might survive to bring to the lfs, otherwise they'll be eaten by the adults. Fresh food is always good. And since they don't live that long, it might be nice to have your own supply of replacement fish if you do try to save...

    GCCA Swap

Sorry I missed you. My son found yet more guppies and after I went broke on plants we escaped early. The crowd gets a little much for the little guy.

Mystery Snails, Ghost Shrimp, and a Goldfish, Oh my!

Snails can be pigs, don't worry about it. The first time I gave my mystery snail an algae tab he acted like a child with a new toy... hugged it in his foot, ate for hours, finally put it down and moved away only to turn back and feel it just to make sure it was still there, and then moved away...

    How long does it take

Glad it all worked out! Ian's advice on the plastic container is great. I've done that but used bag clips to hold it on the side instead of magnets. Wish I had thought of magnets! Your net will be fine. I tend to keep mine in a net for at least a couple of days so I can feed them heavily and...

    Aquatic Experience Chicago

If you look at their website you can see the vendors and layout of the exhibit floor. I'm hoping they have some good swag! :thumb:

    How long does it take

No way to tell how long or how many. I had one that took 4 hours for only 10 fry, and another that took about 1 hour for 40 fry. Just watch the behavior and you should be able to tell when she's done - lack of shivery movements, back to eating normally, not hiding as much, etc. The fry tend to...

    Aquatic Experience Chicago

    I'm going. My son's entered in the kid's tank contest, so I don't have a choice. ;)

    GCCA Swap

I'm going to Aquatic Experience, too. But mostly because my 5yo read the page faster than I did and begged to enter the kid's tank contest. Which is why I'm going to the GCCA swap - to pick up more plants to help his tank design. Things snowball, don't they? :-)

Anyone going to the GCCA swap Nov 3?

I have some free riccia (about a golfball) if someone wants to pick it up at the swap. Just post something here by 8pm Saturday. Also have a bunch of hygrophila polysperma cuttings for trade.

Anyone going to the GCCA swap Nov 3?

I'm just a bit south of you in Hawthorn Woods.

Anyone going to the GCCA swap Nov 3?

The GCCA swap is in Hillsdale... just west of Chicago. Personally, I'm closer to the WI border than downtown Chicago so call it a whole state away from St. Louis!

Anyone going to the GCCA swap Nov 3?

See Home for details. It's in Hillside, IL just off 90. Would be great to meet local folks if anyone wants to meet up.

Have you ever watched this video? It's really helpful when looking at pregnant guppies. Stages of a Guppy's Pregnancy - YouTube

Trying to get female guppies but keep getting males

Unless you're getting the guppy from a known trusted source, don't buy it unless the body is at least 1" long. That way you know they're at least 2 months old and can be assured of knowing the correct sex and coloration you want. Having said that, yes, PetSmart keeps their female guppies...

    Pregnant or not?

Those look like males to me but the angle of the photos isn't making the ID easy. Regardless, without a visible gravid spot they certainly wouldn't be far along if they are pregnant females. This video has photos of guppies in each stage of pregnancy with captions: Stages of a Guppy's Pregnancy...

    low tech plants

Yes. That stuff will grow in a bucket so a low light tank is way better.

Just wondering what peoples food budgets were on their tanks?

I think I have cheap fish! lol My guppies eat pretty much anything that gets in the tank so while I do give them a small amount of flake food (and now much less than I started out giving them) and an occasional treat of freeze-dried bloodworms, they'll happily eat bits of the plants growing in...

How to get rid of snails?

Try placing an algae tab in a net or small jar (laid on its side) on the bottom of the tank overnight. Then in the morning just pull it up full of snails. That worked for me, and combined with less feeding my pest snail population died off.

    plant question

You can float the wisteria till you see roots forming and then plant it. Pretty much any time you trim you can float the trimmings and they'll form roots, even from tiny bits. I pretty much shove anything that has a bit of stem in the substrate and it grows. The stuff without stems I float till...

    low tech plants

I have a 10g that's working on indirect lighting only and yet the growth has been pretty lush so far. Java fern, mosses, hornwort, anubias, water sprite, echinodorus vesuvius will all work. Even hygrophila polysperma grows really well in the areas that get a little more light (and I do mean a...

    feeding apple snails

Are they apple snails or mystery snails? If it's a pomacea diffusa (mystery), then they'll eat any of the fish food. Mine loves freeze-dried bloodworms as much as the algae tabs. If it's a Florida apple snail then they're plant eaters.
