What?! Parasites have appeared in 5-month-old tank!

I have 1 African butterfly fish and 10 pygmy cories. No new introductions in months -- fish or plants. I noticed yesterday a cory was lethargic and swimming funny, occasionally having to flip himself right side up after barrel rolling a few times. I started looking into swim bladder disorder...

They call me the cory killer

Im not sure if this has been mentioned, but how long has this tank been set up? Otos need a mature tank so they can feed off the biofilm. I have pygmy cories who also require a mature tank, but I'm not sure if this holds true for other cories. I would lean towards the batch of fish.

    Plant Advice/Kill Algae

I think I will only dose Flourish once a week. I began to panic when my banana plants started doing badly and upped the dosage to twice a week. These banana plants irritate me, but they're my favorite. Only put the bananas 1/4 inch in the substrate they said, but every time, once they really...

    African Butterfly will not eat

The Internet has the same info over an over on this fish, so talking with other people that have this oddball is really the only way to figure them out. They seem to have limited vision, which would make sense for an animal that relies so heavily on movement. They're basically bats with some...

    African Butterfly will not eat

Make sure the filter output isn't too strong. They rely on surface disturbance to find food. African butterfly fish are wild caught and usually won't take to flake immediately. I would start off on small crickets and work on up to pellets. You might have to poke the pellets with tweezers a...

Old Broken Roots Left in Substrate

I had some plants melt on me (cleaned them too well with hydrogen peroxide dip), so I removed what was left of them. I have three banana plants left, which have proven to have an invasive, complex root system, which spreads from one side of my 20 long to the other. I'm having trouble telling...

Platys, too. Just make sure they don't come with or have babies.

    10 gallon student tank

A 10 is too small for a molly or swordtail in my opinion -- size-wise and bioload-wise. 4 male guppies may work with some shrimp.

    New add in!!

No, bristlenose plecos NEED driftwood for digestion. It is also a part of their natural habitat.

    New add in!!

Btw, my bristlenose grew from 1" to 3" in 3-4 months. She was small but came with a nasty bioload.

    New add in!!

Bristlenose needs driftwood. I used malaysian. Its more splintery than other types, but its cheaper at least around my parts. I find mopani to be too hard, though the two-tone look is gorgeous. Can't speak on behalf of the other types.

    New Additions!

They are both territorial, especially angelfish when they mature. But if you do move the angel, then no worries.

    New Additions!

A 20 is too small for an angel. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but 6" top to bottom is pretty average for an adult. I've heard of them getting larger. Also, the gourami-angelfish combo might be a problem. I'm sure someone with angel experience could tell you better.

Mine went from 1" to 3" in 6 months.

    ADFs Jumping?

Also, ADFs do best by themselves because they are often out competed for food. They're already half blind as is. In a community tank, you will probably have to hand feed using tweezers or a turkey baster to put the food right in front of their mouths.

    ADFs Jumping?

I would personally go with a Versatemp glass top and drill some quarter inch holes along the back piece of plastic so he can get air. The plastic piece is meant to be cut for room for a filter too, which is pretty easy. I like the look of glass. You could also go with a mesh top, which will...

    Yes, it does. Thank you!

    ADFs Jumping?

Yes, mine hopped up onto a plant and jumped out of the smallest crack possible. I found him belly up in the kitchen sink.

To Treat or Not to Treat

I bought a dozen pygmy corydoras Saturday and put them in quarantine. They are eating great and active. I was only going to treat if they showed illness, but a knowitall found me in the store after I purchased them and told me I better treat for parasites. I just said okay, because I'm...

Tankmates for African Butterfly fish and 2 reed fish (new member)

It sounds like you have an awesome fish store. Be extra alert when/if they pair up.

Tankmates for African Butterfly fish and 2 reed fish (new member)

I would be worried angels would tear the ABF up instead. Those long, dangling fins may be too much to resist nipping at, especially if you have a breeding pair. Mine has shown no aggression towards tank mates, but it depends on the personality. ABF usually won't take a bite of another fish...

    Cricket Dust in Water

I dunked a cricket into the water for my new ABF and noticed a trail of dust he left behind. I'm assuming calcium. Could this in any way affect my tank?

    New African Butterfly Fish

I was talking about the bristlenose. ABF won't be happy in a 30" tank?

    New African Butterfly Fish

20 long. If she ended up being laid back, I would upgrade to a 30, but she's too temperamental. She hates the new fish and its just them aside from some shrimp. I have a thread about this actually. She's mean as fire.
